MUNRO
OF INVERNESS, SCOTLAND
Thanks to Patrick Stone of Pennsylvania, USA, my distant cousin for help with this family.
Robert MUNRO was born around 1803. Some records say that he was a native of Inverness and others that say he was from Ross & Cromarty. There is a baptism for a Robert Munro born to John Munro (of the Royal Invalids), and Margaret Morrison in Inverness in 1799. There are other baptisms of Robert�s but in this case, both the parents� names match the future children's names.
On the 22 October 1827 Robert MUNRO married Mary DAVIDSON in Inverness.
As to Mary�s parents, all we can do is speculate. She could possibly be the Mary, daughter of Alexander DAVIDSON and Jannet (Hennet) McGILLIVRAY (McGILVRAY), who produced numerous children in Moy and Dalarossie and then in Inverness between 1789 and 1805, the 1805 child being Mary. Pat Stone has found a marriage record that seems likely for them: Alexander Davidson plus Hennet McGilvray of Dalcrombie, married in his home parish of Bochrubin, Dores, in March of 1770. This would have them producing children from their first in 1772 (William) to Mary in 1805 (not impossible) The combination of names and locations is rather rare. Much more research is needed here.
We have four known children on Robert and Mary and one possible child;
Christian MUNRO — was baptised on the 7th September 1829 in Inverness. She disappears between the 1841 census and the 1851, a time when she would have been of marrying age.
John MUNRO — was baptised on the 14th July 1834 in Inverness. He married Jessie CHISHOLM on the 28 December 1860 in Inverness. Jessie was the daughter of William CHISHOLM and Elizabeth MacKAY. John worked as a carpenter for "Macintosh of Macintosh Place" at Moy Hall. He also ran the Moy Post Office, all in return for around 30 pounds a year and a free house. John and Jessie had nine children. John died in 1916, and Jessie in 1927, both living in Telford Road, Inverness. They are buried in Chapel Yard in Inverness with two of their children.
Margaret MUNRO — was baptised on the 22 January 1839 in Inverness. In 1863 she married John McBEATH, son of William McBEATH and Isabella WILLIAMSON of Halkirk, Caithness, in Edinburgh. Margaret died on the 11 October 1906 in Edinburgh.
Alexander MUNRO — was baptised on the 27 April 1843 in Inverness. Around 1880 he emigrated to the USA where he was a stonemason, and a sculptor of heads. He was living and working in Trenton, New Jersey, in November of 1887, when he was married to Mary Ann Theresa ("Minnie") KELLY. Minnie was the eldest of three Kelly sisters from Cobh, Ireland who married stonemasons in Philadelphia in the 1880s. In March of 1889 they had a son in Camden, New Jersey - Robert Patrick - named for their fathers. Alexander died in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1891.
Mary MUNRO - Family lore from the US, told of another daughter, Mary MUNRO, who married a FERGUSON and went to Australia, where she bore nine children. So far, we�ve found no trace of her. Maybe she was actually Christian or maybe there was another child.
Mary (DAVIDSON) MUNRO disappears between 1843 and 1853. She was alive for Alexander's birth in 1843, the 1851 census lists Robert as married, though Mary was absent, and then in 1853 her husband Robert remarries. A death entry has not been found for her as yet.
Robert remarried in 1853, to 21 year old Elizabeth McBEAN of Strathnairn. Elizabeth was the daughter of Donald McBEAN and Annie McINTOSH. She was also known as Eliza or Betsy.
Robert and Elizabeth had a son, Robert, who was born on the 27 March 1856 at 1 Munro Street, Inverness. Robert (Junior) became quite a prosperous confectioner in Inverness, operating from 7 and later 9 Young Street. He married Catherine Ann CAMERON in 1882 in Nairn. She was the daughter of Hugh CAMERON and Christina ARMSTRONG. Robert and Christina had four children. Robert died in 1929 and Catherine in 1930, both in Inverness.
Robert (Senior) died on the 28 May 1856 at 2 Munro Street, Inverness from Peritonitis. His second wife is listed as running a boarding house at 4 Young Street in 1871 and by 1881 she's running a boarding house at 9 Young Street. Elizabeth (Betsy) died on the 01 May 1890 at 7 Young Street.
