McCAIG OF NEW CUMNOCK, AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND
The spelling of the surname McCaig is usually found in south west Scotland, round Dumfriesshire & Galloway and also in Ayrshire and Argyllshire. It is also found in Ulster, where the usual spellings are McKeag and McKeague. The spelling McKegg is usually found in Cumberland, round about Whitehaven.
Family papers have it that my ancestor John McCAIG was born in Doulgass Mill, Lanarkshire though this has not been proved. A lodged entry on the LDS IGI has his marriage to Catherine LORIMER in 1743 at Morton, Dumfrieshire, but this also needs further investigation.
John and Catherine had two known children;
Robert McCAIG who was born c1748 at Dalleagles, New Cumnock, married Christian FERGUSON. He died in 1825 at Dalleagles, New Cumnock.
Elizabeth McCAIG who married Mungo DOUGLAS.
Robert and Christian had the following children, all born New Cumnock;
Christian born 1788. Married Archibald MARTIN. Died 1870 New Cumnock. Children Margaret Anderson (1827), Robert (1830) and John (1832)

Catherine born 1793. Married Thomas HARKER. One child Thomas HARKER (1821)(Descendants in New Zealand)
Thomas born 1799. Married Wilhelmina CAMPBELL. Died 1853 Kirkcowan. Children — see below
Elizabeth born 1801. Married George McCRAE. Died 1884 New Cumnock. Children James (1827) and Robert (1833)
Thomas McCAIG was born c1799 at Dalleaglesburn at New Cumnock and married Wilhelmina CAMPBELL around 1825. Wilhelmina was the daughter of Ivie CAMPBELL and Margaret DUNBAR. The name Ivie features strongly in the McCAIG family as well as the CAMPBELL family. Thomas and Wilhelmina had the following children;

Margaret born c1832 New Cumnock, AYR. Married? 1st George PARK — New Cumnock. Child William born 1858 New Cumnock. Married 2nd David STEVENSON. Five children all born Dudley, Worcester, England. Wilhelmina (1860), Christina (1860-1926), David (1861-1889), Agnes Jane (1864-1893), Thomas (1866-1871). Married 3rd William PERRY. Died 1902 Bridgnorth, England
Christina born 1832 Minnigaff, KKD. Married Ivie CAMPBELL (cousin) of Dalgig, New Cumnock. Children Ivie (1863-1920), Jeanie Richmond (1865-1938), Thomas McCaig (1867-1926) and John Richmond (1869-1897). Died 1892 New Cumnock, AYR
John born 1834 Minnigaff, KKD. Married Christina MORRISON — Ochiltree. Children Thomas (1861-1925), Jane (1864-1935), James (1867-1934), Christina (1869-1922), Wilhelmina (1871-1943), Margaret (1874-1950), Isabella (1876-1914), Jessie Elizabeth (1879-1966), John (1881-1940), Ivie (1887-1926).
George born 1836 Minnigaff, KKD. Married Mary HARDIE. Died 1897 Ballantrae, AYR. No children.
Edward born 1838 Kirkinner KKD. Married Marion ALLAN. Child; Thomas Edward (1876 Dudley WOR ENG). Died 1918 Ochiltree, AYR
Thomas born 1840 Kirkinner, KKD. Emigrated to Australia. Married Mary FISHER (cousin). Children: Thomas William (1866-1950), Janet Bailie (1868), Wilhelmina Campbell (1870-1871), Unamed female (1873), William (1875), Mary Fisher (1877), John Thomas (1880). Died 1915 Goulbourn, NSW, Australia
William born 1844 Kirkinner KKD. Married Jean McKERROW. Children: Robert (1869-1927 South Africa), Jane (1874-1936), Thomas (1877-1962), Alexander (1878-1945), Hugh Dunbar (1880-1926), Wilhelmina Campbell (1884-1966), George (1889-1949), Christina (1896-1976). Died 1925 Low Balcray Farm, Whithorn, WIG.
Ivie McCAIG was born c1829 in New Cumnock, Ayrshire. He married Margaret McMILLAN in 1863 at Littlemark Hill, New Cumnock. They had the following children;
Wilhelmina Campbell born 1863 New Cumnock. Married Henry GUTHRIE-MILLAR. Children: See MILLAR OF OCHILTREE. Died 1927 Edinburgh. My great-grandparents.
Mary Murdoch born 1866 New Cumnock. Married Adam CAMPBELL. Children: Margaret McMillan (1888), Elizabeth (1890), Wilhelmina (1893), Janet (1896). Died 1910 Coylton AYR.
Jane born 1873 New Cumnock. Married David Paton CLARK. Children: Elizabeth (1902), Maggie McMillan (1904), Jeanie (1907), Mary Paton (1909). Died 1939 New Cumnock, AYR
Thomas born 1875 New Cumnock. Married Annie MORTON. Children: Annabella Hamilton Morton (1905), Ivie (1907). Died 1942 Ayr, AYR.
Christina born 1878 New Cumnock. Married John Mills PATERSON. Children: Ivie McCaig (1904), David (1904), John Mills (1906), Margaret Millar (1909), Edward (1917). Died 1944 Troqueer KKD.
Ivie born 1881 New Cumnock. Married Jeannie SCOTT. Children: Ivie (1904), William Scott (1907), Thomas (1908). Died 1950 Ayr.
