McCAIG OF NEW CUMNOCK, AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND

The spelling of the surname McCaig is usually found in south west Scotland, round Dumfriesshire & Galloway and also in Ayrshire and Argyllshire. It is also found in Ulster, where the usual spellings are McKeag and McKeague. The spelling McKegg is usually found in Cumberland, round about Whitehaven.

Family papers have it that my ancestor John McCAIG was born in Doulgass Mill, Lanarkshire though this has not been proved. A lodged entry on the LDS IGI has his marriage to Catherine LORIMER in 1743 at Morton, Dumfrieshire, but this also needs further investigation.

John and Catherine had two known children;

Robert and Christian had the following children, all born New Cumnock;

Thomas McCAIG was born c1799 at Dalleaglesburn at New Cumnock and married Wilhelmina CAMPBELL around 1825. Wilhelmina was the daughter of Ivie CAMPBELL and Margaret DUNBAR. The name Ivie features strongly in the McCAIG family as well as the CAMPBELL family. Thomas and Wilhelmina had the following children;

Ivie McCAIG was born c1829 in New Cumnock, Ayrshire. He married Margaret McMILLAN in 1863 at Littlemark Hill, New Cumnock. They had the following children;
