MCBEATH OF HALKIRK, CAITHNESS, SCOTLAND AND EDINBURGH, MIDLOTHIAN, SCOTLAND
The McBEATH family were farmers, and for various periods of time lived at Sibster which is not far from the village of Halkirk, Caithness, Scotland. Over the years I have made contact with other McBEATH researchers from Halkirk but have been unable to link them — as yet.
My earliest McBEATH ancestor is George McBEATH born c1768. He married Elizabeth McKENZIE on the 6 Jul 1793 at Halkirk. George and Elizabeth had seven children;
Janet McBEATH born 1797. Married Donald GUNN. Died 1867. Nothing more is known
Elizabeth McBEATH born 1799. Nothing more is known
Margaret McBEATH born 1800. Nothing more is known
Catherine McBEATH born 1802. Married John FAIRWEATHER. Four sons, one daughter
David McBEATH born 1804. Nothing more is known.
William McBEATH born 1806. Married Isabella WILLIAMSON. Five sons, six daughters
James McBEATH born 1809. Nothing more is known
William MCBEATH married Isabella WILLIAMSON in 1832 in Halkirk, and they went on to have eleven children. In the 1841 and 1851 census the family is living at Banniskirk Farm, but by 1857 they are at Sibster, where Williams father George was in the 1830s.
Children of William and Isabella;
Elizabeth born 1833 married Robert SUTHERLAND at the Halkirk Free Church in 1859. They had two sons Robert and John George, and three daughters Isabella, Margaret Caithren and Elizabeth. Elizabeth died in Halkirk in 1925.
Janet born 1834 married John DUNBAR in 1854. Janet died in 1902 in Reay, Caithness.
Margaret born 1836 possibly died young as there was another Margaret born in 1841.
John born 1837 married Margaret MUNRO in 1863 in Edinburgh. They had five daughters, Mary Eliza, Isabella, Margaret, Jessie and Johan and two sons John Alexander and William. John was a builder/mason and I was told that he built all the houses in Thirlstane Road, Edinburgh. This is where he died in 1892.
Margaret born 1841 married Robert NISBET in 1870 in Edinburgh. They do not appear to have had any children. Margaret died in 1894 in Edinburgh.
George born 1843 was scholar aged 8 years on the 1851 census but does not appear on any later census entries. He may have died young.
Isabella born 1846 married Stewart BROWN in Halkirk in 1869 but their children were all born in Edinburgh. Stewart was also a builder/mason. Isabella and Stewart had two daughters Isabella Williamson and Margaret Jack, and three sons Peter, Robert Stewart and Stewart. Robert Stewart married his cousin Johan McBEATH.
Catherine born 1848 married John MANSON at the Free Chuch, Hakirk in 1873. They had four daughters, Isabella Williamson, Catherine J, Margaret Nisbet and Elizabeth Hannah Dunbar, and three sons William, George and John. All their children were born in Halkirk. Catherine died in 1883 at Brawl Castle, Halkirk where her husband was a coachman.
William Henderson born 1850 married Margaret (Sutherland) GRAY in 1875 at the Free Church, Halkirk but their children were all born in Edinburgh. They had seven boys, William Hector Fraser, Donald James, John, David Gray, George, Hector Fraser, and Andrew Gilbert Wauchope and four daughters, Christina Elizabeth, Margaret Ann Gray, Janet and Elizabeth Jane. William was also a builder/mason.
Hector Fraser McBEATH born 1855 married Marion Watson VEITCH at Dalkleith near Edinburgh. Nothing more is known on this couple
David Henderson born 1857 and was on the 1871 census as a 13 year old scholar but does not appear on any later census entries.
In 1858 Isabella McBEATH nee WILLIAMSON died and in 1867 William married Margaret SINCLAIR, a 44-year-old spinster of Halkirk. He was 60. However this marriage was short lived with the death of Margaret only 3 months later. William died in 1885 in Halkirk Village aged 78 years.
