GROSE OF TREGONY, CORNWALL, ENGLAND TO LAMBETH AND KENNINGTON, SURREY, ENGLAND

GROSE OF TREGONY, CORNWALL, ENGLAND TO LAMBETH AND KENNINGTON, SURREY, ENGLAND

The earliest GROSE I can claim is Samuel GROSE, born 1664 at St Enoder, Cornwall. His great great grandson Samuel GROSE was a carpenter in Tregony in Cornwall and then moved to Lambeth/Kennington, in Surrey in the early 1840s. Samuel married Mary TRESISE (TRESIZE) in 1822 and the couple had seven children.

* Keturah was named for one of the wives of biblical Abraham. She married Alfred HILL in 1858 in Kennington and they had one son Alfred Samuel HILL in 1859. At the time of their marriage Alfred and Keturah were both living very close to the Oval Cricket Ground in Vauxhall. It appears Alfred died around 1860 and Keturah then married John JOHNSON, a whip maker of Rusholme, Manchester. He was a widower and 28 years older than she was. John and Keturah had two sons and two daughters, all born in Kennington, Lambeth R/D.

The area that they lived in Kennington (very near Kennington Park) was bombed during World War Two and is now the home to a high rise council estate.

Thanks to the on-line census on Ancestry.co.uk and a very good friend I have been able to find out more on John Johnson. In the 1851 census he was living at 17 Doris Street with his wife Mary aged 47 born Blackbridge, Surrey and 5 children;

In the 1861 census John and Mary are still living at 17 Doris Street with Richard (Solicitors General Clerk), Maria (Envelope stamper) and Ellen (Milliner).

At 16 Doris Street, Samuel and Mary Grose are living with their daughter Kate Hill (Keturah) and her son Alfred as well as Samuel Grose. It was interesting to see Keturah now called Kate as in other records including both her marriages she is called Keturah.
