OCTOBER 1881

Bay of Plenty Times 12 October 1881 p2

RESERVING GOVERNMENT LANDS WITHIN THE TOWN BOUNDARY

The chairman of the Tauranga County Council sent the following letter yesterday to the Minister of Lands, at Wellington, enclosing the subjoined petition, regarding the witholding from sale of all land within the town boundary:-
County Council Chambers
Tauranga
October, 11, 1881
Sir - I have the honor to forward to you a petition that has been placed in my hands to be forwarded to the Government signed by the leading inhabitants of the Tauranga township, praying that all lands within the town boundary may be witheld from sale and as we have hitherto received no endowments to this rising place, which, I believe, is likely to be a future great centre of population, have to add my earnest request that the Government will accede to the prayer of the petition.
You will observe that the petition has been addresses to the Honourable the Colonial Secretary, but I take the liberty of forwarding it direct to you, as the matter is in your department, and I have found it the best department in the public service, so far as despatch and regularity in receiving replies to my various communications are concerned.
I have etc
George Vesey Stewart
Chairman Tauranga County.

The Hon Minister of Lands
Wellington
To the Honourable The Colonial Secretary
We, the undersigned inhabitants of Tauranga, most respectfully request the Government to withold from sale all land now remaining unsold inside of the town boundary, such land remaining beingg required for town purposes when a municpality is constituted therein.
