Sally, b. Feb. 1792 , m. John Hewitt.
Wife Catherine died & he m. 2nd, Jannetji DuBois on Aug. 26, 1798. She
died on June 27, 1838: They had:
William. b. June 5, 1800.
Jannetje or Jane, b. Aug 15, 1803.
History of Delaware County, NY; 1880; pp. 361-2
"When 18 he enlisted in the Revolutionary Army, and served until the
surrender of Cornwallis. Sometime after this he removed to a farm in
the vicinity of Margaretville, where he lived for a time. He next
turned his attention to the broad wooded valley of New Kingston and
was the first man to grapple with the monster maples and waving pines
that grew there. As he penetrated the dense wilderness westward from
the settlement on the East Branch, he took the precaution to blaze the
trees, that he might know his way back; and years afterwards after
this lonely path was called by other settlers "Uncle Jacob's road".
He suffered all the hardships of a new country. For several years,
the nearest flour-mill was at Kingston or Woodstock, 40 or 50 miles
distant. There being no roads grists were carried on horses, or
sometimes on the backs of men. The denizens of the forest, too,
wolves, bears and panthers were of great annoyance, as they preyed
frequently upon domestic animals, especially sheep. But in spite of
all these difficulties, Mr. VanBenschoten toiled on and at his death,
left a good farm to be occupied by his son William. William, who died
at age 38, leaving 4 sons and 3 daughters, only 4 of whom are now
living."
