Thomas Barnett received pension certificate # 13234, dated 28 Feb 1872, at $8 monthly commencing 14 Feb 1871. It was consolidated with his widow's pension # 42664 on 23 Feb 1883. Her certificate was dated 11 Apr 1884 and funds were accrued beginning 12 Nov 1882.

ELIZABETH BARNETT'S CLAIM OF WIDOW FOR SERVICE PENSION,
UNDER ACT OF MARCH 9TH, 1878
WAR OF 1812

County of Monroe

On this 26th day of January, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty-three, personally appeared before me, Moses Gamble Justice of the Peace the same being a court of record within and for the county and State aforesaid, (1) Elizabeth Barnett aged 86 years, a resident of Monroe County in the State of Tennessee, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of (2) Thomas Barnett, deceased, who was the identical (3) Thomas Barnett, who served under the name of (4) Thomas Barnett as a (5) private in the company commanded by Captain Walker, in the ___ Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers commanded by Col. Lillard, in the War of 1812; that her said husband (6) volunteered at Maryville on or about the last days of September, A. D. 1812, for the term of three months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of (7) three months, and whose services terminated, by reason of (8) honorable discharge, at ___, on the last day of December A. D., 1813. She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz: (9) height five feet and 10 inches, hair black, eyes black, occupation farmer, age 22 years, I think. She further states that she was married to the said Thomas Barnett, at the city (or town) of ___ in the county of McMinn, and in the State of Tennessee, on the 25th day of January, A. D. 1821 by one (10) William Lowery , who was a (11) Justice of the Peace; and that her name before her said marriage was Elizabeth Davis; and she further states that (12) the soldier Thomas Barnett had previously married to Nancy McCade. She died in St. Clair County, Alabama and that her said husband (13) Thomas Barnett, died in Monroe County, in the State of Tennessee, on the 11 day of November A. D. 1882, and that she has not again married; and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband since the date of his discharge from the Army, viz: (14) Blount County, Polk County, and Monroe County mostly all of the time. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the pension to which she may be entitled under Sections 4736 to 4740, (inclusive) Revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9th, 1878, and hereby makes David Baker her substitute, of Monroe County, her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute her claim; and she further declares that she has heretofore made no application for (15) pension under act of February 14, 1871 for which pension certificate was issued to Thomas Barnett dec'd commencing February 14th, 1871. I make application under his service pension, and that her residence is No. ___, ___ street, city (or town) of ___ county of Monroe, State of Tennessee, and that her post-office address is Mt. Vernon, Monroe County, Tennessee.

Also personally appeared David Baker, aged 67 years, residing at No. in Monroe County, street, in Tennessee, and Allison Land, aged 55 years, residing at No. Monroe County, Tennessee street, in ___, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, say that they have known the said Elizabeth Barnett for 39 years and for 37 years, respectively; that they were present and saw her sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; and they further say that they are able to identfy her as the person who was the wife of the identical (16) Thomas Barnett who rendered the service alleged in the above application (in the company of Captain Walker in the regiment of Tennessee Volunteers in the war of eighteen and twelve by the following named facts and circumstances, viz: (17) we have lived neighbors to them for the last thirty-five years and upwards and we know that Thomas Barnett has been a pensioner every since 1871 and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

SUPPORTING AFFIDAVIT FOR WIDOW'S PENSION
State of Tennessee
County of Monroe

Personally appeared before me an acting Justice of the Peace of said county William Barnett age 54 years the first day of July 1883 and swears that he has known Elizabeth Barnett nearly the entire time from the fact that the said Elizabeth Barnett is my mother and every since I got old enough to recollect anything I lived with my father and mother till I was married and I have lived all my time near them in this county except 3 years and I know to my own knowledge every since I have been old enough to recollect they have been living together as man and wife. Mother always told me that she never was married till she married Thomas Barnett my father that died on the 11th day of November 1882 and as to a family record of the children's ages I know nothing of it after I was married I have kept a house of my own. I have kept a recod of my age. I further swear that I have no interest in the prosecution of claim for Pension No. 42664, act Mar 9, 1878.

SUPPORTING AFFIDAVIT FOR WIDOW'S PENSION

Before me the undersigned authority this day personally appeared James Barnett who after being sworn says that he was present and saw Nancy McKigg die and saw her buried which death and burial occurred about the year of 1821 in St. Clair County, Alabama. She was my mother and was the first wife of my deceased father Thomas Barnett. My father afterwards married Elizabeth Barnett and now residing in Fannin County, Texas.

ELIZABETH BARNETT'S AFFIDAVIT FOR WIDOW'S PENSION
State of Texas
County of Fannin

Before me the undersigned clerk of the District Court in and for Fannin County, Texas this day personally appeared Elizabeth Barnett who after being duly sworn says she is the widow of Thomas Barnett dec'd. That prior to the marriage of affiant with Thomas Barnett said Barnett had been married to one Nancy McKigg. That said Nancy afterward Barnett and wife of Thomas Barnett died in St. Clair County State of Alabama in the year 1820 or 1821. That affiant was present at her death and burial. That so much time has elapsed that it is now out of the power of affiant to furnish other proof of said death. That affiant was never married except to the said Thomas Barnett. That the age of said Barnett at his death is not known to affiant precisely but she believes him to have been between ninety and ninety-five years of age. That said soldier Thomas Barnett resided in Polk Co, Tennessee in 1850 and in Monroe Co State of Tennessee in 1855 and that said Thomas Barnett always signed his name by mark he not having been able to write his name. Affiant further shows that she is now more than eighty-five years of age and her memory somewhat frail and that the dates herein given may not be exactly correct but that they are very nearly so.
