North City Elementary School, Palos Street, Athens, McMinn County, Tennessee
Athens Kiwanis Club member, Frank Buttram presented me with this award on June 2, 1962, during the annual school awards in North City School gymnasium. This was the first year for the club's scholarship awards program. It was signed by club president Brody Ellis and boys & girls chairman Gordon Sterchi. Now fifty-three years later, it qualifies as a genuine antique and may be the only remaining one for Athens City Schools. Awards Day was a regularly required school day, and all students attended. Afterwards, we received final report cards revealing either promotion or retention for that year. Of course, I attended but never imagined that I would receive an award. Mine was the final award presented, and I was flabbergasted! Obviously, this was very significant to me, or else I would never have saved this certificate. It encouraged me to believe in my God-given acuity. Along with the certificate was a check from Athens Kiwanis Club for $10. With that, I began saving and hoping to fund a college education -- nothing less than God's miracle for a poor kid from North Athens.
