William Barker Dies Wednesday
William Barker, 89, father of Police Chief Harold Barker, died at 1:30
p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 1949, following an illness of 10 days.
Mr. Barker
was born Feb. 7, 1860, in Nottingham, England, and served in the British
army in South Africa during the Boer war. He was discharged in 1883 and
came to the United States shortly after. He lived in Iowa and Minnesota
before moving to Rockford where he lived for several years. He was employed
there by the J. I. Case Co. for 47 years. His wife, the former Emma Sheppard,
who he married 63 years ago, died 10 years ago and since then Mr. Barker
had made his home in Delavan with his son.
Surviving
besides Chief Barker are two other sons, Arthur, Cordova, Ill., and William,
Rockford; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. One son preceded
him in death.
Funeral
services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Barker home in Delavan,
721 Parish street, the Rev. Louis Matheus officiating. Burial was in Greenwood
cemetery, Rockford.
