Harold C. Barker Dies; City Police Chief 25 Years
Harold C. Barker, 60, 721 1/2 parish Street, Delavan, veteran police officer,
died Sunday, September 4 at Homestead Convalescent hospital, Delavan. Barker
had been in poor health since his resignation as chief of police five years
ago and had been hospitalized for the past few months.
Harold
C. Barker was born July 4, 1900 in Rockford, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William
Barker. He was united in marriage to Pauline Taylor in Rockford in 1920.
Barker
began his career in law enforcement in 1919 when he joined the Rockford
police department; he became an officer with the Winnebago, Ill., county
sheriff's department in 1922. He came to Delavan in 1930 and served as
the chief of police for 25 years; he retired in March, 1955. He was also
a Walworth county under-sherriff and deputy coroner during this time.
Barker
was a member of the Wisconsin Police Chiefs Association.
Survivors
are his wife, Pauline; one daughter, Mrs. Irvine Llewellyn; and one grandson,
all of Delavan.
Funeral
services were conducted by the Rev. L. H. Matheus at 2 o'clock Tuesday
afternoon, September 6 at the O'Brien and Betzer Funeral Home. Burial was
in Greenwood cemetery, Rockford.
