Richard Moore was raised in Highgate, VT, the oldest of nine children. Highgate is a town in northwest Vermont, just south of the Canadian border. The Moore farm was in an area known as Hog Island, or Donaldson Island. The Moores and Donaldsons were closely linked families - at least four of Richard's siblings married Donaldsons.

According to family legend, Richard had three wives and six children by each wife. No evidence of the other two wives has been found, but the legend is plausible as Richard's activities between about 1840 and 1868 have not been uncovered yet.

Carrie Bradley was raised in Swanton, a short distance from Highgate. Richard and Carrie were married in Franklin County in 1868. They migrated west after the birth of their first child, settling on a farm just south of Durand, Winnebago Co., IL. There they had five more children. They divorced in the fall of 1886, Carrie alleging that Richard had hit her and son Fred with a stick.

With the break-up of the marriage, Richard moved on to Nordeen, Nebraska. He presumably died there sometime around 1895.

On 10 October 1887, Carrie married Robert COLTON, a prominent elderly widower who owned the farm next door. They had no children. She passed away 15 March 1933 in South Beloit, IL, at the home of her daughter. She was buried with her second husband in Howard Union Cemetery, Pecatonica, IL.

Children of Richard Moore and Caroline Bradley:

1. Phebe A. Moore, b. 1868. Married Robert Delbert ‘Del’ HUGHES in 1844. They had children Guy, Chester, Ethel, Eva, Robert, Kent, Hazel, and Helen.
2. Fred H. Moore, b. Feb 1870. His first wife's name was Edith, they had son Frank. His second wife's name was Julie.
3. Jennie Moore, b. 1870. Married Frank Columbus ‘Clum’ HUGHES (brother of Del Hughes).  They had children Frank (nicknamed Happy) and Carrie.
4. Richard Moore, b. Dec 1872. Married Amanda JOHNSON about 1897. They had children Bertha, Oscar, Blanche, Esther, Alfred, and Mrytle.
5. Oretta Mae Moore, b. 1877. Married Freemont RANDALL, children Lillian, Cora, Rob, and Walter.
6. Stephen Bailey Moore, b. Jul 1879.
