Obviously I don't have a whole lot on this family. Another area to work on!
There were numerous Thompson lines in the Maple area, several unconnected. In The Crooked Sourwood, Ben Jones tells of a Thompson family, perhaps fathered by a William Thompson, who were Catholics from Maryland. This may or may not have been my William Thompson.
