Heritage Of Hope 1905-1983 Friday, January 19, 2001 GEORGE LEIBEL In the year 1907, George Leibel and his wife Helen (Kraft) arrived in the Denzil area to start a new life. George Leibel was born May 21, 1874 in Odessa, Russia, Helen Leibel was also born in Odessa, Russia on April 13, 1878. They homesteaded 5 miles east and 2 miles north of Denzil. George and Helen farmed here for 25 years from 1907-1932. Although there were many hardships, they were not alone. George's parents Peter and Magdalena and his 4 brothers and 5 sisters had also homesteaded in this area at the same time. George and Helen Leibel were well-known among the first settlers. Many of these settlers coming from Battleford would stop and spend the night at the Leibel home as they made their way further west. They retired in the Village of Denzil in 1932 where they lived until their deaths. George died May 8, 1961 at the age of 87. Helen died Feb. 21, 1962, at the age of 84. Their children were: John - married Mary Saturns. They farmed in the Salvador area. He died January 25, 1976 at the age of 74 Peter - became an Oblate Priest. He died at the age of 43, on August 26, 1947. Mike - married Margaret Rissling. They farmed in the Denzil area. They are presently retired in Denzil. George - married Anne Klotz. They are presently retired in Battleford. Pauline - married Ben Zoller. They lived in Leipzig. She died July 18, 1982 at the age of 69. Joe - married Amelia Bartsch. He died March 26, 1983 at the age of 67. Prior to his death, he was retired in Lloydminster. Pius - became a Oblate Priest. He is presently the Parish Priest at Luseland.
