      A Harvest of Memories

Michael Flasch, born in Austria in 1856, along with his wife Maria Huber, born in 1867 and whom he married in 1887 and five children: Theresa (Mrs. Steve Leidl), Mary (Mrs. John Scherman), Elizabeth (Campbell), Louise (Mrs. A. Kauth) and son Frank, arrived from Gerisdorf, Bourgenlant, Austria in 1906. A son Michael Jr., had arrived earlier and a son Fred, was born here.

Michael had been a tailor, a maker of fine clothes. They took up a homestead NE 28-38-20.

Their son, Michael, arriving earlier and already having a homestead and a house, took in the family. They stayed hime until they had the misfortune of losing their home to fire. They then stayed with the John Leidl family until a house was built on their homestead.

Their first years of farming were done by oxen. Cows were milked, butter was made and sold to customers in town, to help support the family.

The younger children all attended Belleview Plains School.

In 1937, the old folks moved into Wilkie, where Michael passed away in 1940 and Maria in 1959.

A son, Fred, who married Elizabeth Gilles of Leipzig and lived with his folks, continued to farm the land after his parent's retirement.

Their children, Eugene of Glaslyn, Raymond of Saskatoon, Doreen (Lewendon) of Saskatoon, David of North Battleford, all attended Belleview Plains School.

Fred and Elizabeth moved to a farm at Leipzig in 1945, where the other four children; Roy of Saskatoon, Joyce (Vaessen) of Landis, Greg of Saskatoon, and Rodney of Saskatoon, all started school.

Fred passed away at their retirement home in Wilkie in 1976 and Elizabeth still resides there. She enjoys her gardening and the activities at the Senior Citzens Centre.
