      A Harvest of Memories

In 1910, our father, Fred L. Feist, emigrated from Russia to Regina, Saskatchewan. There he worked in construction and helped dig the basement for a big hotel. In 1911, Dad took up a homestead south and east of Reward. On February 5, 1912, he married ella Mardian in Kronau, Saskatchewan. She had also emigrated from Russia with her parents, a sister and two brothers in 1910. In their first years together, they were hailed out three years in a row, which made money rather scarce.

In 1929, Dad came to the Wilkie area looking for land to rent. He went into the real estate office in Wilkie and as it happened, Sam Buxton was in the office. He offered to rent Dad four quarters. In the spring of 1930, Mom and Dad moved up to this area - with ten children.

Although we belonged to the Maxwell School District, we started to school at Glen Logan as it was closer. However, Glen Logan became overcrowded, so we were transferred to Maxwell.

Going to school in those days meant travelling by horse and buggy in summer and horse and sleigh in the winter. And, when the horses were needed at home for field work during the busy season, we walked the three and one half miles. Mom or the older girls would pack us each a lunch consisting of peanut butter and syrup or scrambled egg sandwiches and a cookie. Occasionally we'd get an apple. All packed with loving care in a jam or syrup pail.

In the spring of 1935, Dad was moving a granary. Somehow, he broke through the snow ans slid underneath the granary, while the horses were pulling it. He broke his leg and spent over six months in the hospital. His leg never did heal properly and he had trouble with it for the rest of his life.

The family eventually grew to include sixteen children (plus one, who passed away as an infant). And there were always at least five or six going to school at a time, which kept our mother busy baking bread. We still swear it was the best around.

In about 1935-36, times were very hard. Our parents at that time were receiving a relief payments about $5.00 a month. A local municipal councillor at that time made the rude comment that my father shouldn't have had so many children and then he would have been able to have lived fairly well with $5.00.

In 1935, the family moved from the Buxton farm to a farm north of Scott. In 1937, Dad bought a half-section of land from the Hudson Bay Company at the location where we now live.

Dad passed awayn in 1970 and Mom died in 1979.
