      A Harvest of Memories

I, Shirley Alene Parry was born in Saskatoon on February28, 1933 and spent the first two years there. In 1935, I came with my mother and father to Phippen to live on the farm. I started school at Maxwell in the spring of 1940, mother having to drive me three and one-half miles in a one horse cart. The first winter I could nut attend school because the distance and amount of snow and severe cold. The following spring I had to catch up with the class. By then I was able to ride horseback so that became my means of travelling to school. In 1943, my sister, Joyce, started school so this meant we had to drive a one horse cart in the summer and a covered sleigh in the winter. It took us over an hour to travel the three and one-half miles to school, and once there we had to unhitch the horse, stable it, attend to it feeding at noon and then at the end of the day, hitch the horse up again for our return journey home. Although the travelling to school and the severe winters were hard to take at times, there are some great memories of those years. The preparation for Christmas Concerts, the ball games, with the neighbouring schools, the music festivals and sports days.

In the fall of 1949, I came to Wilkie to take my grades 10, 11, and 12 at McLurg School. After finishing school, I worked as a clerk in Mr. R. Slotzer's Department Store. During this time, I had met Edward Elder.

Ed was born in March 1931, at Scott, Saskatchewan and lived on a farm near Revenue, Saskatchewan. He moved to Wilkie in 1950 with his parents. Ed worked for Wilkie Lumber and Imperial Oil for 11 years. He then worked for his brother John Elder as an apprentice in plumbing and heating and received his gas fitter and plumbin certificates.

Ed is presenting employed at Smith Brothers Garbage in Wilkie.

When my dad retired, we assumed the running of the farm. At his death in October of 1983, the farm was passed on to Ed and I. We plan to continue working the land.
