      Hamlet of Thackeray

Thackeray is the first grain point on a CPR branch line that runs north form Wilkie to Lloydminster. In the south and southwest of the province, it was common practise to name a town after a writer, and over a dozen places derived their names this way. The practise was less common in the northwest, so Thackeray was an exception. The late John Allan of Battleford lived in this district for a time and he heard that it was named for William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-63) who was one of the greatest British novelists of the Victorian Age.
