The beginning of St. Joseph's Colony was in 1905. "Father Schweers, OMI and his fellow travellers, however were not the first newcomers to the colony; there were three settlers in the neighbourhood. These three pioneers were the original settlers in St. Joseph's Colony. They were the following farmers: Frank Wurzer, Melchior Schermann and Rudolph Schmidt, all of them born in Austria. On April 23, they arrived at their new homes coming via Battleford." ~St. Joseph's Colony 1905-1930
"In April, 1905 the first German Catholic immigrants left the USA and headed for Canada. After almost twenty days of travels and adventure they reached their destination which was approximately 3 miles north and 2 miles west of the present site of Leipzig.
Within a few days another group of settlers arrived with Fr. Theodore Schweers. The date was May 11, 1905. On May 12, the settlers 11men and 2 women, celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving. The day became "our birthday". That day marked the beginning of the Leipzig Community. By the end of summer some 30 families had filed on homesteads and taken up residence from as far north of Cavell to as far south as Handel; from as far east as Landis to the edge of Tramping Lake. Most of these families settled in an area around what was to become "Pascal". The settlement was named Pascal in honour of Bishop Pascal, Bishop of Prince Albert who was gracious enough to give this new area his Spiritual guidance." ~The Leipzig Historical Society - Leipzig: 1905 to 1980
Description of the Country:
The general character of the landscape of the prairies is the same throughout. Small clumps of trees and bushes or lakes seldom break the monotony of the green flatlands. The appearance of the open prairies is like prairies is like an ocen; there are no visible boundaries except the distant horizon. If a cannon were fired at a horizontal height of 4 or 5 feet the bullet could travel for hundreds of miles with out striking a tree or bush. ~St. Joseph's Colony 1905-1930Location:
St. Joseph's Colony is located in the province of Saskatchewan. The borders of the colony are: on the south, 8 miles south 52 latitutde; on the east, a broken line with the farthest point being 32 miles east of 109 longitude; on the border of the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta. The area covers 42 miles from north to south and 72 miles from west to the farthest eastern edge. The dirstrict forms a regular rectangel which is broken only on the east side and comprises 77 townships with an area of 2,772 square miles. ~St. Joseph's Colony 1905-1930
