Samuel Henry Harkwood Livingston- 1831

 

 

At seventeen Sam was bold and sailed to America to find fortune

The gold rush in California lured determined men with opportune

Always searching he panned along the North Saskatchewan River

Panning in poor weather was treacherous- his family now quiver.

 

One freezing day, Sam arrived on the river bank at Pakan they say

He was barely alive, quick, take him in said Jane feeling dismay.

Little did she guess that he would be her loving partner for life

He took her to Calgary to start a new life that was safer, less strife.

 

He prospered by leaps and bounds with pigs and farm machines

New produce and acquiring cattle fulfilled his ambitious dream.

Recognition in various venues was recorded in history books

Sam was charismatic, flamboyant, a tall man with good looks.

 

Being the �First Farmer in Calgary� brought respect and notoriety.

As founding Director of the Calgary District Agricultural Society

-Taking grain and vegetables to the Toronto Industrial Exhibition.

Land titles needed; he formed the Alberta Settlers Rights Association.

 

The Calgary Branch of the Canadian North West Territories Stock Association

And serving as a School Board Trustee were his Civic donations.

Becoming a delegate to the Conservative Party Convention acquired

His gold strike on the South Saskatchewan River finally transpired!
