Poem for
Mary Howard nee Howse

Mary Howard nee Howse (Granny Maw)

Like her forefathers Mary was a strong independent soul

Only when all of her work was done did she ever cajole

With six children to care for there was no time to waste

Her sewing and cooking, others complimented with haste

Flour and sugar sacks provided material for garments to sew

Edna her daughter says, “we were always dressed just so.”

Recycling yarn to knit a new sweater was not extraordinaire

Her children were warm and comfortable- nothing left bare.

Providing enough food was challenging with resources few

Many afternoons Mary picked wild berries down by the slough

Pheasants and wild rabbits the meat of the day she’d can

Everyone loved her meals; she cooked a miracle in the pan.

Even without much Mary still loved to share with another

Company was always welcome- meals she would discover

Anyone in need could come and stay it was always agreed

Her dear heart remained soft and caring to others in need.
