Pioneer Days- 1900's

Pioneer Days- 1900's The effects of pioneer times seemed to exacerbate the need
for each family to rely on the interpersonal patterns that had been passed from one
generation to the next. The Howard family had the support of their spiritual beliefs to
support them during challenging times.

When my grandparents immigrated to Canada, they came with six other families
that were their friends in Kansas. These families all provided a great deal of
support for one another. There was a spirit of cooperation rather than competition
amongst every family in that community. The tone of the community was consistent with
the tone of the Howard family. The community environment encouraged the Howard
family to remain consistent with their multigenerational family traditions and patterns.
The uncertainty of life and the daily challenges of pioneering increased the Howard's
need for faith and comfort.

In the early days of pioneering there were no schools or churches so the Howard's had a
set time for daily devotions at home. They also gathered the children from the
neighboring farms for a weekly "Sunday School" in their home. The core belief system
of the Howard family was based on multigenerational Christian values and provided the
early pioneers with emotional, social and spiritual survival strategies.

The stress and strain of pioneer life increased the need of the Howard
multigenerational patterns to be incorporated into daily practice. Their way of relating to
everyone, including their own family members provided a strong foundation for the
personal growth of everyone involved with the Howard family. I was so fortunate to have
my great grandparents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins as active participants in
my early childhood years when I was first learning about the world and the people in it.
