A letter from Clifford Howard-

Cliff and Uncle Floyd Howard of the North Bend District were among the early settlers. They lived on
homestead farms. They picked Seneca root and sold it in earlier times. They have erected good buildings on
their farms. Floyd has sold great quantities of wood during the winter. He came to town in a jeep. I. Cliff
Howard now have a good car. I enjoy motoring to town.

My parents (Bert Howard) came to Lloydminster in 1907 by train from Kansas, USA. They
proceeded to the North Bend District. They broke the land for a garden on June 3. Ten acres of land were
broken up the first year. We threshed with flails instead of a thresher. A log cabin was my first habitation.
Later a frame house was built. They purchased a tractor for fanning in 1912. We made our living from the
natural resources. Tapping of wild animals was accomplished. Gold washing along the Saskatchewan River
was done in 1930.

I have now sold my homestead and live on land near there. The family grew up and moved away
to make their own living. In the autumn, hunting was done. Gradually we accumulated some livestock.
Fishing in lakes and rivers contributed to our living. I now live a contented life. I have cared for my aged
mother on the farm. She was 89 this fall when she passed away. I find reading a cheerful pastime. I often
enjoy a car ride to visit some of the old-timers in the neighborhood.
