Records for the Jacobs Lutheran Church, Georges Twp, Fayette Co, PA, show that a "Johannes Schuman" had several children baptized during the 1790s: Anna, b. 2 April, 1794, bpt. 19 July 1795; Rachael, b. 1 June 1795, bpt. 19 July 1795; parents Johannes and Elisabeth Schuman; Joseph, b. 11 May 1797, bpt. 30 July 1797, parents Johannes and Catarina Schuman.
Fayette Co, PA Taxpayers Rolls show a John Shuman in Georges Twp. in 1789 and 1793. They show a John, Jr. in 1795, and both a John Jr. and John Sr. in 1798. This points strongly to John’s being in PA until at least the middle of 1798.
A John Shueman appears on the census records for Springhill Township, Fayette County, PA in 1800, and a Phillip Shueman is in Georges Township. Living with Phillip is a male above the age of 45 — could he be their father?
There is strong evidence that upon moving to Monongalia County about 1801, John first settled on Drake's Run, about a mile or two northwest of Mannington, which is now in Marion County. He later settled on Minister's Run, near the notch of the present Marion-Monongalia border, where he was living when he died.
John may possibly have been married once before. His daughter Mary's death record, supplied by her son Daniel Kendall, lists her parents as John and Lucinda Shuman. His Will mentions 13 children. For ease of reference, all are listed here as children of John and Elizabeth.
1. Catharine SHUMAN. Born 1788 in Georges Twp, Fayette Co PA. Died 1848 in Amos, Paw Paw Creek, Marion Co. WV. This is the date of birth and date of death given in the N. F. Kendall book (p 44). She was named for her (great?) aunt, Catharine Cunningham.
She married James KENDALL, son of Samuel KENDALL and Mary SMITH. Born 2 Jun 1789. Died 20 Sep 1867, Ministers Run, near Amos, Paw Paw Creek, Marion Co. WV. Occupation Teacher, Farmer, Cooper, Carpenter. They had the following children:

Her actual date of birth (which some researchers place as late as 10 Mar 1795) is questionable:
A Mary Kindell d. 5 Feb 1876, Marion Co., d/o John & Lucinda Shuman, age 86-10-25, b. East Va.; info s. Daniel. If this is the same person (which seems likely), her birth date would have been on or about 10 March 1789.
The N. F. Kendall book gives her date of birth as 10 Mar 1786 and date of death as 5 Feb 1854. It says she and her husband lived on Dent's Run west of Mannington, WV, and are buried in the Kendall Cemetery near the Kendall homestead.
Claud C. Kendall uses the 3-10-1795 date of birth. He says she was living with her son Daniel in Wetzel Co. and was brought back to Dents Run for burial.
She married Samuel KENDALL 2nd, Rev, son of Samuel KENDALL and Mary SMITH, Before 1809. Born 18 Apr 1781. Died 21 Jan 1854 in Dent's Run, Mannington, Marion Co. WV. Religion Baptist. They had the following children:

4. Joseph SHUMAN. Born 11 May 1797, Georges Twp, Fayette Co PA. Baptized 30 Jul 1797, Jacobs Lutheran Church, Fayette Co, PA. Died 11 Aug 1847 in Henry Co., IN. Occupation Farmer. Religion Methodist. Approximtely 1832 he left migrated from WV to Henry Co, IN where he purchased land.
He married Elizabeth BEATY, daughter of Alexander BEATY and Mary S. "Molly" CARTER, 13 Nov 1817 in Harrison Co., VA (WV). Born 3 Jun 1798 in Harrison Co., WV. Died 7 Jan 1884 in Madison Co., IN. Occupation Homemaker. Religion Methodist.
In her later years she was called "Grandmother Durant" and her birth and death information is recorded as Elizabeth Durant in her son Jehu's family bible. She was a grouchy old lady and somewhat absent-minded. One story tells that she wandered around all morning in a bad mood, grumbling. When they finally got her to tell them what was wrong, she said she couldn't find her glasses. But they were on top of her head all the time!
She lived in a small log cabin behind her son Jehu's larger house in her final years. She smoked a corncob pipe, and died when her log cabin caught fire. She had the door latched and wouldn't let her son Jehu and others enter. By the time they could break in, it was too late to save her.
Joseph and Elizabeth were well-known to the courts of Henry Co, IN during the 1840s. She sued for divorce, but it was never granted, and she finally withdrew her suit. Later, she petitioned to have him declared insane, which was granted. Three months later, he petitioned to have himself declared sane, and that was granted!

He purchased land in Wayne Twp, Monroe Co, OH in 1836, and spent the rest of his life there.
He married Mary KENDALL, daughter of Rev. William KENDALL and Elizabeth SIMMONS, 15 Jan 1824 in Monongalia Co. WV. Born 1808. Died 6 Nov 1886. They had the following children:

11. Sophia SHUMAN. Born About 1812 in Minister's Run, WV. She was listed in John's Will as "insane."
12. David SHUMAN. Born About 1814 in Minister's Run, Monongalia Co. WV. A David Shuman purchased land in Henry Co, IN in 1835. This land is just north of that of Joseph Shuman, which was purchased in 1833 and later.
A David Shuman married a Martha Kelsay in Morgan Co, MO on 24 August 1837. This David Shuman purchased land in Moniteau Co, MO on 10 January 1840.
13. Joshua SHUMAN. Born 22 Feb 1817 in Minister's Run, Monongalia Co. WV. Died 5 Dec 1894. Religion Methodist Episcopal.
He first married Melinda Ann FLOYD, daughter of Henry FLOYD and Elizabeth JOHNSON, 10 Feb 1835. Born 14 Jan 1819 in Monongalia Co. WV. Died 14 Jun 1847 (The History of Tyler Co., WV to 1984 gives her name as "Belinda Floyd"). They had the following children:
