Descendants of William Cash

Generation No. 1

1.  WILLIAM1 CASH1,2 was born Abt. 1653 in Scotland, probably Strathmiglo, Fife, and died Abt. 1708 in Westmoreland Co., Virginia.  He married ELIZABETH SKINNER.

Notes for WILLIAM CASH:

William Cash, Master Mariner, was born in Scotland, and settled in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1667. There he married Elizabeth Lambert, bought a home on a quarter acre at the junction of Essex and Forrester Streets. Eight children were born to them, four sons and four daughters.

In 1676 the Mariner brought to Salem his nephew, also named William Cash, from Scotland. This younger William was the Immigrant Ancestor of our American Cash family.

The Salem William was owner and Master of the Brigantine, "Good Intent", and was very likely a master mariner by the time he was 22 years old. He operated his ship in the British Isles-American Colonies trade.

A British tax record in 1677 lists William Cash as "seated" in Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co. Va. He left a will, written 16 February 1708/7 and recorded in Westmoreland Co. 25 August 1708, naming his children: William, Thomas, John, James, Howard, Joseph, Peter, and a daughter, Anise Cash. His wife, Elizabeth, was named as executrix and guardian of his children, William, Thomas, Anish until they became of age. Therefore, it is believed all the other children were older than these three whose ages were given in the will. Peter Skinner was named as executor, and John Skinner a witness.

John Cash who served in the Revolution was from Rockingham and also was a seaman. He married (evidentally the second time) Elizabeth the daughter of Alexander Keith, This marriage was solomnized by 1790 and by her he had five children. This Keith family was a noted one in Virginia. Dr. Robert Stuart in his list of Revolutionary Soldiers in the Navy, lists a John Cass but some of the researchers state this was really Cash.

Notes for WILLIAM CASH, SR.:

From the book, "Rockcastle County, Kentucky and Its People, 1992", pg. 140 (Bonnie  [email protected], July 18, 2000)

"The first Cash in the Rockcastle County area was William, son of John and Elizabeth and great-grandson of William Cash, the Scottish immigrant who settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1677.  William, who migrated to Rockcastle County, was born about 1752 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, he married Dorothy Irwin in Spottsylvania County, Virginia in 1771.  Following the Revolutionary War, in which he served, he and his family moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina and they remained there until 1811.

In 1811, William and Dorothy, along with several married children and neighbors moved to the Rockcastle/Pulaski County area of Kentucky. His son, William Jr. and his wife Mary "Polly" (McQueary) and Polly's parents, William and Nancy McQueary moved to this area at the same time.  William, Jr. and Polly had at least two sons prior to Polly's death, probably 1813. William, Jr. married a second time on 8-1-1814, Olive Wilson, and they had one child, a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Lenuel Harris. William, Jr. died about 1815, leaving two orphaned boys, John and Stephen, his second wife and infant daughter."

From ROCKCASTLE REMINISCENCE, Publication of The Rockcastle County Historical Society, Vol 5, No 3, Researched by James McKinney; Rt. 1, Box 483; Mt. Vernon, KY 40456:

"WILLIAM CASH FAMILY

William CASH was born in 1752 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Most of what we know about William comes from his pension record. William entered into service in 1776 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia and was on militia duty one year. The next year he was called into duty and served about 5 months. He also served several short tours guarding prisoners.

After the war, William lived in Virginia until about 1785, when his name appears on the Wilkes Co., NC tax list. William lived in Wilkes County until 1811, when he moved to Pulaski Co., KY, where he lived until his death 18 June 1837.

William applied for a pension in Rockcastle Co., in 1834, and has often been listed with Rockcastle Co. Veterans. In the pension application he states that he lives almost upon the line between Pulaski and Rockcastle Co. It is 18 miles to his county seat with a difficult watercourse to cross and only 9 miles to the county seat of Rockcastle with a good road.

William married Dorothy (Dolly) Irwin in Spottsylvania Co., Va. and had the following children: (1) Lewis m. Mary, (2) James m. Hannah, (3) Nancy m. Perry Rash, (4) William m. Polly McQueary, (5) Larkin m. Sarah Pumphery, (6) Waller m. Jincy Debord."

NC from abt 1785[tax list] to 1811, when he moved to the Pulaski-Rockcastle Co. KY area near the county lines.  He lived in Pulaski Co., and is buried near the Rockcastle Co. line at Mt. From http://www.angelfire.com/ok/okcity/Cashnts6.html

William Cash was placed on the pension Roll of Kentucky - does not seem to have had bounty land but was placed on the roll 23May1834. His pension began 3Mar1831 and his age is given as 81 so that his birth year would be 1753. This seems to have been received in Pulaski County, KY. He is listed as having served in the Virginia Militia. In the DAR Vol 159 page 149 he is given as born 1753 died 1837 and was a pensioner. Served with the Virginia Troops, 1776 to 1781 was born in Westmoreland County, VA and died in Kentucky. Married 1774 to Dorothy Irwin born 1750 and died 1842.

Date of birth is questionable. Pension appl. states birth dates of Lewis' children beginning in 1801 so he should have been born about 1775, but that was before his parents were married in 1782. Either the marriage date was wrong or his father was married before Dorothy Irwin.

Notes for JOHN CASH:

It is possible that John Cash's first wife was Elizabeth Hocker, sister to his second wife, Mary E. Hocker. There are several Hocker genealogists who say this is true. But, I have found enough errors in their work that I am not convinced. Still researching it.

In the book "Rockcastle County, Kentucky and Its People, 1992" there is an article written by Walter Lee Cash of Brodhead, KY. He states that John and Stephen were the sons of William Cash, Jr. and Mary "Polly" McQueary and that they were both born prior to 1813 (Polly's death).  This information seems to be validated by the pension application of William Cash (John’s grandfather).

I believe that "our" John is the son of William Cash, Jr. and Mary "Polly" McQueary because (1)his age on the census puts his date of birth at 1809 North Carolina which fits with the information on William Cash's pension appl, (2)his daughter, Cynthia Cash, listed her father’s place of birth as Wilks County North Carolina on her marriage license, (3)because Stephen Cash and John both named sons Milton Green, (4) in 1850 John was living in Pulaski Co KY near Stephen C. Cash, (5) there are land sales between Stephen and John.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

1840 census for Rockcastle County Kentucky, John Cash:

1 male under 5 (James b.1840)

1 male 5-10  (William b. 1829)

1 male 30-40 (John b. 1809)

2 females under 5 (Sarah b. 1836 Elizabeth b. 1838)

1 female 5-10 (Mary Ann b. 1834)

1 female 20-30 (Elizabeth b. 1813)

He did not have any slaves in 1840.

In 1839 John received 47 1/2 acres of land in Pulaski County through a land grant. In 1846 he received 150 acres in Rockcastle County through a land grant.

Pulaski County Kentucky Deed Book 13, pg 38, 16 Nov 1846-

Stephen C. Cash of Pulaski County sold to John Cash of Rockcastle County a tract of 30 acres of land on which William Cash lived on  5 Oct 1832 on the waters of Buck Creek.

John sold this land 20 Sept 1849 to Semeon Dowell Book 13, pg 693, Pulaski Co KY.

Pulaski Co KY Tax Records:

1852 John Cash 670 acres Sinking Creek

                             60 acres Lincoln Co

1853 John Cash 350 acres Rockcastle Co Skags Creek

320 acres Pulaski Co Buck Cr

60 acres Lincoln Co Hanging Fork

1854 John Cash 250 acres Lincoln Co Hanging Fork 6 children between 8-18 yrs (Elizabeth, Cynthia, John F., George, Milton, Henry-assumes James, Sarah, Bashaba and Stephen A. are dead)

         William A. Cash

After 1854 I did not find John Cash in Pulaski Co Tax Records.

By 1850 John is living in Pulaski County, KY with his wife Elizabeth and their eleven children who ranged in age from 21 to 1 year. The children were William age 21 , May (or Mary) A. age 16, Sarah age 14, Elizabeth age 12, James age 10, Cinthia A. age 9, John F. age 7, George age 5, Bashaba age 4, Milton age 3, and Sarah age 1. It is odd that there were two Sarah’s living with them. It may be that one of them was not their child. It is apparent that neither one of them survived to adult hood. The 14 year old could have married by 1860, but she nor her children is named in John’s will. I found a Sarah Jane Cash married Isaac L. Evans in Lincoln Co KY on Oct 19 1854 with John Cash as surety. The 1 yr old Sarah on the 1850 census does not appear on the 1860 census either.

John's first wife, Elizabeth, died 9 Jan 1854 about 10 days after the birth of their last child, Stephen A. She left John with nine children still at home including Milton who would have been only 7 years old. She was about 40 years of age. She is buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Pulaski Co, KY.  I visited the cemetery in June 2002. Elizabeth’s tombstone is small and barely legible. It reads "Elizabeth C wife of John Cash. Born Jan 9, 1813 Died Jan 9, 1854. Next to it was a tombstone that read "Infant Son of J & EC Cash". I believe this was probably Stephen A. Cash. I don’t know when he died but he was not alive in 1860. Next to that was a broken tombstone. The next tombstone read "Jehoshaba P Cash Born Jul 26 1846 Died Jul 5, 1858. I believe this is the child who was listed on the 1850 census as Bashaba age 4. It was curious to note that Jehoshaba’s tombstone was large and much more impressive than Elizabeth’s. At first I couldn’t understand why and doubted that it was the child of John and Elizabeth.

But then I visited the graves of John and his second wife, Mary Hocker at the Buffalo Springs Cemetery in Stanford, Lincoln County, Kentucky. There were many Hocker tombstones there and all were very impressive, tall, columnar monuments. There was some money in the Hocker family. If Mary had been previously married as indicated by the use of Mrs. on her marriage certificate, she had inherited money. All the Cash tombstones in the Buffalo Springs Cemetery are large and impressive.

Less than eighteen months after Elizabeth’s death, John has moved to Lincoln County Kentucky and married Mrs. Mary E. Hocker. Lincoln and Pulaski counties are adjacent and it is said that many Cash’s lived in the Lincoln, Pulaski and Rockcastle counties.

They are listed on the 1860 census for Lincoln County, KY. They are shown as John Cash age 51, Mary E. age 37, Cynthia age 18, John F. age 16, George W. age 14, Milton Green age 12, Henry H. age 10, Nancy A. age 3 and Loretta age 10 months. The fact that Milton is listed as age 12 points to him being born after June 15, 1847.

Lincoln Co KY Tax Records:

1863 John Cash 250 acres Hanging Fork-1 slave, 13 horses, 22 cattle, 4 children 6-18 yrs (Milton, Henry, Alice, Bell), 35 hogs, 10 tons of hay, 875 bu corn, 85 bu wheat.

The lines below his show the following information with no numbers in any columns:

Same as for G. Hocker Son

Same for George Hocker Son

Same for Joseph Hocker

Same for R W hocker

Same for Sarah Kirland

Same for Newton Hocker

Same for Julius Waters

From the above I believe John Cash inherited the land from Mary Hocker's family (father or husband?)

1864 - 1868 Same as 1863 except William A Cash is also listed.

In the Lincoln, KY 1870 census we find John Cash age 61, Mary E. age 46, Henry age 19, Alice age 13, Bell age 11, and Preston age 4.

Interestingly, the 1870 Lincoln KY census shows three of John and Elizabeth's children; John F., George and Milton G. living apart from John and Mary. John F. is listed as age 26 farmer, with George age 24 working on the farm, Milton G. age 22 working on the farm, and three women Kitty Hays age 53, Rachel Hays age 14, and Martha Hays age 10 as domestic servants. Presumably these are relatives of their mother, Elizabeth Hays. Possibly Kitty was their aunt.

The Lincoln County, KY census (ed 70 pg 254)  for 1880 shows John Cash age 71 living in Turnersville Pct. which is between Stanford and Hustonville. He is with his three children by his second marriage; Alice, Belle and Preston. Mary Hocker has died.

In late January 1882, John Cash wrote his last will and died 1 February 1882. Sadly, his youngest son Preston died in December of that year and his son-in-law Michael Cloyd died in October. There was a small pox epidemic in Lincoln County in 1882 and that may have been what killed them.

John Cash’s Will

as transcribed by Beverly A. Shipley in June 2002

In The Name of God, Amen.

I, John Cash of Lincoln County Kentucky do make ordain and publish this as my last will and testament concerning the disposition of my worldly estate after my death - that is to say -

Item 1. I will and direct that all of my just debts and funeral expenses shall be paid out of the proceeds of my personal estate as soon after my death as practical.

Item 2.I give devise and bequeath unto my two sons Milton Cash and Henry Cash of Bosque County in the State of Texas, in fro simlate, the lands which I own in the State of Texas, being the farm of about two hundred and twenty five acres of land on which they now reside on Bosque River in Bosque County Texas - the land to be divided between them according to a division which they have already agreed on. This with what I have heretofore given them is what I consider the full share of each of them in my estate and they are to have nothing more from my estate and are to be charged nothing for the use of the land and are to charge nothing for any expenses incurred or improvements made on it.

Item 3. In disposing of the residue of my estate among my other children, I wish it distinctly understood that as I received one thousand dollars by my last wife, the mother of my three youngest children, Alice Cloyd, Belle Cash and Preston Cash, I intend that they shall each receive the benefit of it, and for that reason I give to each of them as hereinafter specified $333 33/100 more than what I give to my other children hereinafter named.

Item 4. I direct that my farm on which I now live in Lincoln County be divided into two parts by a division line beginning at a stone corner to Mrs. Nannie Good at the end of a post and rail fence which runs up from the branch at the south end of a stone wall and running thence from this stone an easterly course to the line of W.C. McCormack so as to include one hundred and thirty acres (130) of land on the west or north west side of this line. This one hundred and thirty acres is to be again sub divided into four (4) lots as follows:

Lot No 1 To contain twenty five acres to be laid off next to McCormack’s line by a line beginning in the division line between me and Baughman and running parallel to McCormack’s line which is about south 55 degrees west straight to the main division line above named so as to include twenty five acres in the boundary.

Lot No 2 To contain thirty nine (39) acres to be laid off next to No 1 by a line parallel to the division line between this and Lot No 1.

Lot No 3 To contain thirty nine acres to be laid off next to No 2 by a line parallel to a division line between this and Lot No 2.

Lot No 4 will contain 27 acres being the residue of the 130 acres west or north west of the main division line.

Item 5. To my son William A. Cash I devise the lot of land designated above as Lot No 1 containing 25 acres of land, which I charge to him at the price of twenty eight (28) dollars per acre making $700.00 for this item. I have heretofore given and advanced to him property to the amount and value of six hundred and fifty dollars 47 cents ($650.47) making in the aggregate the sum of Thirteen hundred and fifty dollars 47 cents ($1350.47) with which I charge him in the distribution of my estate.

Item 6 To my grandson Allen L. DeBord the only child of my deceased daughter Mary Ann DeBord I give and devise the lot of land designated above as Lot No 2 containing thirty nine acres which I charge to him at the price of thirty (30) dollars per acre, making eleven hundred and seventy dollars ($1170.00). I have heretofore advanced to his mother property charged at two hundred dollars, which added to the land makes an aggregate of thirteen hundred and seventy dollars ($1370.00) with which I charge him in the distribution of my estate.

Item 6 To my grandchildren, Martha Ellen Smith, Fannie Swinney and Robert Henry Swinney, the children of my deceased daughter Elizabeth M. Swinney, I give and devise the lot of land designated above as Lot No 3 containing thirty nine (30) acres which I charge to them at the price of thirty dollars ($30) per acre making eleven hundred and seventy dollars ($1170.00). I have heretofore advanced to their mother property charged at two hundred dollars which added to the land makes an aggregate of thirteen hundred and seventy dollars ($1370.00) with which I charge them in the distribution of my estate.

Item 7 To my daughter Cynthia Meginnis I give and devise as her separate estate free from the debts contracts and liabilities of her husband. I give and devise the lot of land designated above as Lot No 4 containing twenty seven (27) acres, which I charge to her at thirty dollars per acre making eight hundred and ten dollars ($810.00). I have heretofore advanced to her money and property amounting to four hundred and fifty eight dollars 75 cents (including a note of $207.00 paid for her husband) making with the land her given an aggregate of twelve hundred and sixty eight dollars 75 cents ($1268.75) with which I charge her in the distribution of my estate.

Item 8. To my son John F. Cash I give and bequeath eight  (80) shares of the capital stock of the Stanford and Hustonville Turnpike Road Company for which I charge him eight hundred dollars ($800) or $10 per share. These I give to him absolutely. I have heretofore given and advanced to him to the amount of $370.65 making now an aggregate of eleven hundred and seventy dollars 65 cents ($1170.65) with which I charge him in the distribution of my estate.

Item 9. To my son John F. Cash, I give and bequeath in trust for the use of benefit of my son George W. Cash eighty shares of the capital stock of the Stanford & Hustonville Turnpike Road Company to be by my said son John held and controlled in the following manner towit-

He is to draw the dividends each year and disburse the same for clothing or board or both for my said son George or for such purposes as he may consider for Georges best interest. But George is not to have the right to sell any of the stock or to charge the same or its dividends with any debt.

I charge George eight hundred dollars ($80) for this stock and have heretofore advanced to him $366.44 making an aggregate of eleven hundred & sixty six dollars 44 cents with which I charge him in the distribution of my estate.

Item 10. To my daughter Nannie Alice Cloyd wife of Michael Cloyd I give and devise forty two acres of land on my farm to be laid off next to the lands of B.G. Gover decd and Mrs. Hill by a line beginning at a stone corner to the land bought by W.H. Murphy of James M. Wray, and running from said stone a northerly course to the main division line directed in the fourth item of this my will so as to lay off to her the forty two acres of land for which I charge her thirty dollars ($30) per acre making an aggregate of twelve hundred and sixty dollars ($1260) with which I charge her in the distribution of my estate. I have made advancements to her amounting to two hundred and fifty two dollars ($252) and I charge her with the aggregate, fifteen hundred and twelve dollars in the distribution of my estate.

Item 11. I give and devise to my daughter Belle Cash fifty four acres of my farm to be laid off by a line beginning at the stone corner to Nannie Good where the main division line begins thence from that stone a straight line to W. H. Murphy’s line so as to include and lay off the fifty four acres west of the line. For this I charge $30 per acre making sixteen hundred and twenty dollars ($1620) which is all I charge her with in the distribution of my estate. She is the owner of the organ now in my house and my estate is to set up no claim to it.

Item 12. To my son Preston Cash I give and devise the residue of my farm, being about thirty four acres including the improvements which I charge to him at the price of forty five dollars per acre.

This is all that I charge him with in the distribution of my estate.

Item 13. Out of the residue of my estate, I direct that my three children of my last wife, Alice Cloyd, Belle Cash and Preston Cash, shall each receive such a sum of money as will when added to her or his share herinbefore given and charged to them aggregate the sum of seventeen hundred and three dollars 33 cents which is $333.33 more than the greatest amount given to any of my older children, and which is thus given to my said three children on account of the $1000 which I received by their mother.

The residue of my estate to be then equally divided between all my children, except Milton and Henry. Allen DeBord taking the share which his mother would take if living and Elizabeth M. Swinney’s children taking the share which she would take if living, but before this distribution is made, those who are not charged with $1370 are to be equalized up to that amount.

Item 14. I appoint my son John F. Cash the executor of this my last will and testament.

Witness my hand this 24th day of January, 1882.

Notes for ELIZABETH HOCKER:

Elizabeth died 9 Jan 1854 about 10 days after the birth of her last child, Stephen A. The next tombstone reads "Jehoshaba P Cash Born Jul 26 1846 Died Jul 5, 1858. I believe this is the child who was listed on the 1850 census as Bashaba age 4. It was curious to note that Jehoshaba’s tombstone was large and much more impressive than Elizabeth’s. Buried next to Jehoshaba is Sarah J. Evans (also Elizabeth and John's daughter). Her tombstone reads " Sarah J. Evans wife of Isaac S. Evans Born Jan 12 1836 Married Oct 19 1854 Died Nov the 17th 1869".

Notes for MARY E. HOCKER:

George Hocker age 1 KY

a couple of households above them is:

I believe that M.E. Hocker is the Mary E. Hocker who married my ggg grandfather, John Cash, in Lincoln Co KY in 1855. I have marriage records of John Cash married Mrs. Mary E. Hocker on May 5, 1855 in Lincoln Co KY. What happened to the husband and children?

-------------------------------

Mary E. Hocker is named in her fathers will of 1854 and he states that she may live with her mother as long as she is single. No mention of children.

              v.   JAMES CASH42, b. Abt. 1840, Kentucky, possibly Pulaski County; d. Bef. 24 Jan 1882, Kentucky43.

Notes for JAMES CASH:

I have not located James on the census after 1850. I have searched Lincoln Co KY. We know he was alive in 1860 because of his military service. He was not with John F. and George in 1870 so he may have died. He is not named in his father's will.

The following information came from www.ancestry.com. The three brothers, James, John F., and George Cash all enlisted in the Confederate Army as Privates in Company B, 6th Cavalry Regiment Kentucky on 08 September 1862 in Stanford, KY. There is no information as to when James and John F. were discharged.

George was listed as a Prisoner of War in the battle fought on 08 October 1862 at Perryville, Kentucky. John F., George and Milton are in the 1870 census in Stanford, Lincoln Co, Kentucky. I've not been able to locate James on the 1870 census.

In John Cash's will, he gave George 80 shares of the capital stock of the Stanford & Hustonville Turnpike Road Company. But he directed that the shares be held in trust by John F. and controlled by him. "He is to draw the dividends each year and disburse the same for clothing or board or both for my said son George or for such purposes as he may consider for Georges best interest. But George is not to have the right to sell any of the stock or to charge the same or its dividends with any debt."

George died in 1910 and left his estate to James N. Cash.

American Civil War Battle Summaries

Perryville, Ky.,

Oct. 8, 1862.

Army of the Ohio.

Early in August 1862, the Confederate forces under Gens. Bragg

and E. Kirby Smith united for an invasion of Kentucky, in the

hope of forcing the state to secede from the Union. Smith

entered Kentucky via of Cumberland gap and moved toward

Lexington.

Bragg's column crossed the Tennessee river at Chattanooga,

moved rapidly through middle Tennessee, and on Sept. 13 was at

Glasgow, Ky., the objective point being Louisville. If

Louisville could be seized and held the states north of the

Ohio river would be in danger of invasion. Leaving a

sufficient force to hold Nashville, Buell pushed forward with

the remainder of his army in a race with Bragg for Louisville,

where the Federal advance arrived on Sept. 25, and the rear

division four days later.

At Louisville Buell found a large number of raw recruits from

the states of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, and immediately set

about the reorganization of his army by intermixing the new

troops with the old without changing the old organization.

When reorganized the Army of the Ohio numbered about 60,000

men.

It was composed of the 1st, 2nd and 3d army corps respectively

commanded by Maj.-Gens. A. McD. McCook, T. L. Crittenden and C.

C. Gilbert. McCook's corps embraced the 3d and 10th divisions,

commanded by Brig.-Gen. L. H. Rousseau and Brig.-Gen. J. S.

Jackson; Crittenden's corps was composed of the 4th and 6th

divisions, commanded by Brig.-Gens. W. S. Smith and T. J. Wood,

Gilbert's corps consisted of the 1st, 9th and 11th divisions,

commanded by Brig.-Gens. Albert Schoepf, R. B. Mitchell and P.

H. Sheridan.

Opposed to this force was the Confederate Army of the

Mississippi under Gen. Braxton Bragg, the estimated strength of

which was about 68,000 men. The right wing, under Maj.-Gen.

Leonidas Polk, consisted of Cheatham's division and the cavalry

brigade of Col. J. A. Wharton. The left wing, commapded by

Maj.-Gen. W. J. Hardee, was made up of the infantry divisions

of Brig.-Gen. J. P. Anderson and Maj.-Gen. S. B. Buckner, and

the cavalry brigade of Col. Joseph Wheeler.

It was Buell's intention to start from Louisville on the last

day of September and move against Bragg, who was then at

Bardstown, about 45 miles south, but an order was received

relieving him of the command of the army and turning it over to

Maj.-Gen. George H. Thomas. The latter declined to accept,

however, and was made second in command.

This proceeding delayed the movement of the army for one day,

and on Oct. 1, it marched out in five columns. The left moved

toward Frankfort to hold in check the Confederates in that

vicinity, and the other four moved over the roads leading via

Shepherdsville, Mount Washington, Fairfeld and Bloomfield to

Bardstown. Each column encountered Confederate detachments a

few miles out from Louisville and the delay occasioned by the

almost constant skirmishing gave Bragg an opportunity to get

away from Bardstown, the last of his infantry retiring about

eight hours before Buell's advance entered the town.

A sharp skirmish occurred between the cavalry and artillery,

the pursuit of the Confederate rear-guard continuing for some

distance in the direction of Springfield. Believing that the

enemy would concentrate his forces about Danville, Buell

ordered McCook to move toward that point via Harrodsburg while

Crittenden proceeded on the Lebanon and Danville road and

Gilbert took the direct road to Perryville.

Shortly after leaving Bardstown Buell received information that

Kirby Smith had crossed the Kentucky river near Salvisa and was

moving to effect a junction with Bragg at Harrodsburg or

Perryville. Orders were therefore sent to McCook to move

directly to the latter place. Gilbert's corps arrived within 3

miles of Perryville on the afternoon of the 7th and was drawn

up in line of battle, as the enemy appeared to be in

considerable force and an attack was apprehended.

Capt. Gay pushed forward with his brigade of cavalry and a

battery, driving the Confederate rear-guard back about a mile

and developing the enemy's position, which was such that it

indicated he intended to make a stand at Perryville. As water

had been somewhat scarce during the last three days, Buell's

first step was to gain possession of Doctor's creek, a

tributary of the Chaplin river, and to accomplish this Col.

Daniel McCook's brigade of Sheridan's division was ordered to

seize and hold a position commanding the creek.

The enemy tried to prevent this, but McCook carried out the

order just before daylight on the morning of the 8th. Orders

were sent to commanders of the 1st and 2nd corps to move at 3

a. m. on the 8th and take positions on the right and left of

Gilbert. These orders did not reach McCook and Crittenden

until after 2 o'clock in the morning. The former marched at 5

o'clock and reached the field at 10:30 a. m., and the latter's

command was not in the engagement at all.

The battle on the 8th began with the attempt of the

Confederates to drive McCook from his position covering

Doctor's creek, and was opened with artillery. McCook ordered

Barnett's battery to the right of his line to reply, and after

about three-fourths of an hour Barnett succeeded in silencing

the enemy's guns. Buckner then commenced massing his troops in

the edge of the woods in which McCook had placed his

skirmishers.

Gay's cavalry started toward Perryville, but was stopped by

Buckner. Dismounting part of his command, Gay joined the

skirmishers of the 54th Ohio and soon became engaged with

Buckner's force, consisting of two brigades of infantry. The

2nd Mo. and 44th Ill. were then sent forward to the support of

the skirmish line, driving the enemy from the woods and back

across an open field.

In the meantime the divisions of Mitchell and Sheridan had been

moved to a position where they could come quickly to McCook's

support, with orders to hold their ground until the army was

prepared to attack in force. About the time that Buckner was

driven back across the field Rouscseau's division came up on

the Mackville road and formed in an open field on the left of

Gilbert, but with considerable space between the two commands.

At 2 p. m. the enemy made an attack on the skirmishers of the

33d Ohio. The remainder of that regiment and the 2nd Ohio were

sent to the support of the skirmish line and in a short time

the action became general, the heaviest assault falling on the

left of the line, where it was gallantly repulsed by

Starkweather's brigade.

Gen. Jackson was killed at the first fire, and this caused a

portion of his division to give way in some confusion. Brig.-

Gen. W. R. Terrill, commanding the 33d brigade lost his life

while trying to rally the men, and 1O pieces of his artillery

were left on the ground, though 8 of these were afterward

recovered.

The Confederates next took advantage of the gap between

Rousseau's right and Gilbert's left, pressing the attack at

that point with an overwhelming force. Rousseau's right was

turned and his line was being forced back, when Gooding's and

Steedman's brigades of Gilbert's corps came to his assistance,

driving back the enemy and reoccupying the ground near the

Russell house. Steedman posted his battery along with that of

Pinney's near the Russell house and opened a terrific fire on

the Confederate lines, while the batteries of Sheridan's

division caught the enemy on the left flank and poured in a

heavy enfilading fire from that direction.

Carlin's brigade of Mitchell's division now reinforced

Sheridan, a charge was made with such intrepidity that the

Confederates were completely routed and forced back through the

town, Sheridan capturing 2 caissons and 15 wagons loaded with

ammunition, as well as the guard with them consisting of 3

officers and 138 men. This ended the battle, though, the Union

commanders spent the greater part of the night in perfecting

their plans for a renewal of the fight on the following

morning.

At daylight on the 9th the Federal camps were astir and at 6

o'clock the corps of Crittenden and Gilbert moved forward to

attack the enemy's front and left flank. When the advance

reached the town it was discovered that the enemy had abandoned

his position during the night and fallen back toward

Harrodsburg. The Union losses in the battle of Perryville were

845 killed, 2,851 wounded and 515 missing. Bragg reported his

losses as being 510 killed, 2,635 wounded and 251 missing.

This engagement ended the Confederate invasion of Kentucky.

The effort to force the state to secede had failed. On Oct. 12

Bragg made a report from Bryantsville, in which he said: "The

campaign here was predicated on a belief and the most positive

assurances that the people of this country would rise in mass

to assert their independence.

No people ever had so favorable an opportunity, but I am

distressed to add there is little or no disposition to avail of

it. Willing, perhaps, to accept their independence, they are

neither disposed nor willing to risk their lives or their

property in its achievement."

In the same report he also says: "Ascertaining that the enemy

was heavily reinforced during the night, I withdrew my force

early the next morning to Harrodsburg and thence to this

point. * * * My future movements cannot be indicated, as they

will depend in a great measure on those of the enemy." The

only "reinforcement" added to Buell's army on the night of the

8th was Crittenden's corps, and this was near enough to have

been brought into the action at Perryville, had the commanding

general deemed it necessary.

As "the enemy" showed a disposition to act on the aggressive,

Bragg hurried to get out of Kentucky, retreating via Cumberland

gap into Tennessee, the Union army continuing the pursuit as

far as London Ky., harassing the rear-guard and capturing a

number of stragglers. (This engagement is sometimes called the

battle of Chaplin Hills.)

Bosque Co Texas Tax Rolls:

1881 Cash, H.H. (no real property)

1882 Cash, H.H. 2 cows

                   W.A. 2 cows

He was not there after 1882.

In 1880 census Henry is living in Bosque Co., TX with his brother, Milton G. and wife Gabriella.

Apparently Henry H. left Bosque County Texas sometime in 1883 or 1884 and went back to Lincoln County Kentucky. This is shown by deed records placing him in Texas in 1883 and in Lincoln County Kentucky in 1885. This was shortly after the deaths of his father, his step-brother and his brother-in-law who all died in 1882. Henry met and married Maggie about 1884. Maggie died in November 1885. I don't know where Henry went from there.

Lincoln County, Kentucky deed book 16 page 50, Henry H. Cash sold 41 acres of land to Alice Cloyd and Bell Cash due to the death of Preston Cash.

Could not locate Henry in 1900, 1910 or 1920 Texas census soundex. May have to look at individual counties.

I have a green crockery pitcher given to me by my grandmother, Frances Elisabeth Cash. She said it was given to her as a wedding gift in 1925 by her uncle, Henry Cash.

1900 census Crab Orchard, Lincoln Co, Kentucky:

Mattie J. Feb. 1862 38 mother of 3 children all living

               Gertie M.         Jan 1892         8 daughter

               George J.        Aug 1893        6 son

               Lucy E. Jan 1896    4 daughter

I don't know for sure if this is the same Henry H. Cash, but I believe that it is.

According to Chuck Hocker, "Henry married the widow Mattie J [Padget] Ross the 25th of December 1890 in Lincoln Co, Ky. Mattie was born in February 1862 in Kentucky. Mattie Padget had been married to Newton Ross, and we do not know of any children from this previous marriage. Mattie and Henry Hocker Cash had four children as of 1900, all born in Lincoln Co, Ky. "

Obviously from the 1900 census they had 3 children not 4 as he stated.

------------------------------------------------

I could not locate Henry Cash or his wife or children in 1910, 1920 or 1930. If he died before, it is possible that his wife remarried.

Notes for MAGGIE C.:

The existence of this wife is based upon the tombstone at Buffalo Springs cemetery in Lincoln Co, Ky. The tombstone is in the same area with John Cash, Mary E. Cash, Nancy Alice Cash, Michael Cloyd, Etta Cash.

The tombstone reads Maggie C. wife of Henry H. Cash, born Oct 9, 1850. Fell asleep in Jesus Nov. 26, 1885.

LEE 28 Dec 1854 in Pulaski County, Kentucky64.  She was born 11 Sep 1833 in Kentucky65, and died 21 Jan 1913 in Lincoln Co., Kentucky65.

Notes for WILLIAM A. CASH:

Lincoln County, Kentucky Deed Book 16 pg. 276, William Cash and wife, Paulina E. Cash, deeded 41 acres of land to Alice Cloyd and Bell Cash due to the death of Preston Cash. This was in 1883.

I have searched for William in 1860 Lincoln Co census and not found him. I did find him in the tax rolls for 1854-56 in Pulaski Co KY. He was not there in 1857-1858. Then he shows up in the Lincoln Co KY tax rolls in 1864-1867. In 1864 he has one child between 6-18 yrs, in 1865 he has two children between 6-20 yrs. He is not listed with any property except livestock. Sometime between 1867-1870 he moved with his wife and children to Champaign County, Illinois. Champaign County is in the east central part of Illinois near the border with Indiana. They are on the 1870 census for Sadorus Twp, Champaign Co IL pg 261. Sadorus township is in the extreme southwestern part of the county.I did not find any other Cashs near him in that county. There were several Kentucky born Cashs in Williamson County IL in the 1870 census. Williamson county is near the border with Kentucky.

By 1880 he and his family have returned to Lincoln Co KYand are shown on the census for ed 69, pg 252C. ED 69 covers the following area: beginning at Hall's Gap, and including all within the following boundaries. From Hall's Gap with the road leading to G. C. Petry's thence with the County road to where it crosses Buck Creek, thence with Buck Creek to the Pulaski line, thence S. W. with the LIncoln Co. line to the extreme Southern point of Lincoln Co. line, thence N. W. with the Lincoln and Casey Co. lines to Green river, thence N. E. with Green river as far as it is the boundary line, between Precincts Nos 1 and 7, thence with the boundary line between Precinct 1and 7 to the beginning.

Hi Bev,

My Great Grandmother's name was Annie Elizabeth Cash, b. 1857 in Pulaski Co., Ky.  I am trying to find her parents and this site is the first hope I've had in years.  My Granny told me very little about her parents but she did tell me that her Mother and Father; James Pleasant Head, b. 1859-60, first met when Annie was working as a cook in a Lumber Camp in Bullitt Co., Ky. and that she had just moved back to Ky. from Illinois.  She was well educated for that time and she taught James Pleasant how to read and write, after they were married.  Granny also thought there was some Indian line but didn't want to talk about it because, "some people look down on ingins as bad as they do (insert the n. word here.  I refuse to even type it.)."  Granny was b. in April 1884.  She was the second child of the union.  She had two full blooded siblings.  A sister named Emma, b. 1882 and a brother named James, b. 1886.  Annie died shortly thereafter and James Pleasant went on to marry at least four more times and fathered several more children.

I would love to find some proof that your Annie and mine are the same.  Any suggestions as to census' or websites that might be of interest?

Thanks,

PJ

In the 1880 census for Lincoln County, KY John F. Cash is age 36 with wife Lucy J. age 32, son James age 8, daughter Mary age 2, and nephew John age 22. I don't know whose son the nephew is. William A. had a son named John F. but he is with William in 1880. Would either be James' or Georges' son. Since James is not mentioned in John Cash's will of 1882 and neither is any heir of James I assume that he was dead with no heirs. Therefore, the John Cash living with John F. in 1880 would be George's son.

From the LDS website we find John Cash and Lucy J. Lewis were married 17 Nov 1870 in Lincoln, KY.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

According to Chuck Hocker, John and Lucy Lewis were third cousins.

Children of JOHN CASH and LUCY LEWIS are:

               i.   JAMES NEAL8 CASH, b. 07 Aug 187199; d. 09 Dec 1947, Lincoln Co, Kentucky99; m. ALLIE B. DODDS, 1895, Lincoln County, Kentucky100; b. 29 Nov 1877; d. 25 Oct 1920, Lincoln Co, Kentucky101.

Notes for MARY CASH:

In 1900, Mary and her husband were living with her parents in Turnersville Pct, Lincoln Co, KY. They'd been married one year and said they had one child living, but there was not a child listed on the census.

23.  MILTON GREEN7 CASH (JOHN6, WILLIAM5, WILLIAM4, JOHN3, JAMES2, WILLIAM1)107 was born Bet. 16 Jul - 13 Sep 1847 in Pulaski Co., Kentucky107, and died 21 Apr 1918 in Post, Garza County, TX108.  He married GABRIELLA CAMPBELL "ELLA" SINGLETON109 26 Sep 1875 in Clifton, Bosque County, Texas110,111, daughter of ROBERT SINGLETON and WINIFRED STEADHAM.  She was born 1859 in Alabama112,113, and died 10 Jun 1920 in Post, Garza County, TX114.

Notes for MILTON GREEN CASH:

Through the LDS website, I have found a Milton Cash born 1847 in Pulaski, Kentucky to John Cash and Elizabeth Hays. Using the dates on the various census documents, I've calculated that Milton was born between July 16, 1847 and Sept. 13, 1847.

Milton lived with his mother and father in Pulaski County Kentucky probably near the town of Crab Orchard where there is a John Cash Road until his mother died in 1854. He was seven years old. Shortly after that, the family moved to Lincoln County Kentucky near the town of Stanford. It was here that his father married his second wife, Mrs. Mary E. Hocker.

On the 1850 Pulaski County, KY census we find John Cash age 41 who was born in N. Carolina  listed as a farmer with wife Elizabeth age 36 who was born in Kentucky and eleven children all born in Kentucky. The children were William age 21, May (or Mary) A. age 16, Sarah age 14, Elizabeth age 12, James age 10, Cinthia A. age 9, John F. age 7, George age 5, Bashaba age 4, Milton age 3, and Sarah age 1.

In the 1860 census for Lincoln County, KY Milton is living with his father and stepmother and six siblings. It is in this census that we find Milton’s middle name shown as Green. This middle name of Green presents a bit of a mystery. Our family history says his name was Milton GUY. So far, I've found no documents to substantiate this. His marriage certificate to Gabriella says M.G. Cash. His death certificate also lists him as M.G. Cash. In fact, every legal document I’ve found either lists him as Milton G. or M.G. Cash.

By 1870 Milton and two of his brothers, John F. and George are living together in a separate household from their father and step-mother. They are farmers and are between 22 and 26 years old. Three women, Kitty Hays age 53, Rachel Hays age 14, and Martha Hays age 10 are living in the household with them as domestic servants. Presumably these are relatives of their mother, Elizabeth Hays. Possibly Kitty was their aunt.

Sometime between 15 July 1870 (census date) and 1 January 1872, Milton and his brother Henry H. left Kentucky and found their way to Bosque County, Texas where Milton met and married Gabriella Singleton. It's my theory that the marriage of Milton's brother, John F. to Lucy Lewis in late 1870 led to Milton and Henry H. leaving Kentucky and heading to Texas.

William A. Cash was the first cousin of Milton G. Cash. William married Nancy Bullock and Milton's son, Robert M., married Katie Lenora Bullock. Question....could this relationship be the reason Milton came to Texas. Were the Bullock's here already?

I first found Milton G. and Henry H. Cash in Bosque County Tax Rolls for 1872 in precinct no. 4. They were not listed with any real property.

What I found out in Bosque Co. Texas was that Milton G. Cash bought and sold quite a lot of real estate. The first purchase that I found was on 9 Dec 1872, Deed book K, page 419, Milton G. & Henry H. Cash bought lot 5 & 6 consisting of 111 3/4 acres each on the Bosque River for $1,117.50. This was the farm where they lived. This land they later sold to their father, John Cash, who then signed a power of attorney giving them power. My quess is that they needed money to finance some of their other land purchases. This land was then willed to them by their father, John, in his will of 24 January 1882 (Lincoln County Kentucky Will Book ??, page 22.

On 15 August 1885 Henry H. Cash and wife, Maggie C. Cash of Lincoln County, Kentucky sold their interest in the land back to Milton for $500 payable in four installments at 7% interest: $75 due on 1/1/1886, $141.66 due 1/1/1887, $141.66 due 1/1/1888, and $141.66 due 1/1/1889. (Bosque County Texas Deed Book 8, pg. 115) The last land transaction that I found for Milton was dated December 1898 and he was living in Scurry County, Texas at that time. He sold two parcels of land 166 7/8 acres and 186 acres for $5,125 at 10% interest.

In 1883, Milton sold 41 acres of land in Lincoln County, Kentucky to his sisters, Alice Cloyd and Bell Cash. It seems that he inherited the land from his brother, Preston. (Lincoln County, KY deed book 16, page 54)

In about 1885 Milton and Ella were deeded 40 acres of land as heirs of R.J. Singleton and Winifred Singleton. (Bosque County Texas Deed Book 18, pg 90)

In the 1880 census for Bosque County, Texas Milton Cash is listed as age 32. Also listed are wife Ella, age 20, son John age 3, daughter Winnie age 2, daughter Bell age 2 months, and brother Henry H. age 30.

It lists Milton as a farmer born in Kentucky and his father born in N. Carolina and mother born in Kentucky. Shows Ella being born in Alabama as were her parents. Their children were all listed as being born in Texas. Henry H. is shown to be a farmer born in Kentucky with his father being born in N. Carolina and mother born in Kentucky.

In the 1888 Bosque County Directory Milton is listed with $2,570 in assessed value and his occupation was tax assessor and farmer. He was not listed in 1889.

We don't know exactly when Milton and Ella left Bosque County and settled in Floyd County. Since their daughter, Carrie Bell, married James W. Permenter in Scurry County in 1898 I think it's safe to assume they were living in Scurry County for some of the time between 1890 and 1900.

By census time in 1900 they have moved again. This time to Floyd County, Texas where they lived for about five years before moving to Mitchell County, Texas. It seems that everywhere he went, Milton was buying and selling real estate.

I have not been able to find Milton Cash in 1910 or 1920 census index/soundex. I have not looked at the counties where they might have been. Possible places to look in 1910 is Floyd Co., Post,Garza Co. ; Petersburg, Hale Co; Lynn Co; Yoakum Co.

Milton's will was dated March 12, 1918 and he died 21 April 1918 in Post, Garza County, Texas. His estate was valued at $8000 and included 640 acres of land in Yoakum Co, Texas, 90 acres of land in Garza Co, and 160 acres of land in Lynn Co. He owed over $8000 on the land in Garza and Lynn counties to the estate of C.W. Post.  He left everything to his beloved wife, Ella.

The death certificate for Milton Cash states a birthplace of "Standard Kentucky". He is listed on the 1860 and 1870 census for Stanford, Lincoln County, Kentucky. The death certificate names his father "John Cash" born in Kentucky and his mother "Lizzy Cash" born in Kentucky. His cause of death was paralysis. His death certificate says he was 69 years old and was born Oct. 7 1849. I believe this date to be wrong. Census records indicate that he was born between June and September 1847.

Notes for GABRIELLA CAMPBELL "ELLA" SINGLETON:

My great aunt, Audra Covington, wrote in her memoirs that Gabriella's last name was Campbell. Not sure where she came up with this name. The marriage certificate shows her name to be Singleton. Milton and Gabriella named a son Cloyd Campbell, so there may be some family name. Maybe her mother's maiden name?

6/26/2003-I now believe that Gabriella's middle name was Campbell. Her father had a sister named Gabriella who married a Dr. Farquhard Campbell. She was apparently named after her aunt, Gabriella Campbell. On the tombstone of her son, Jesse, buried in Oswald Cemetery is written: Jesse Cash, son of M.G. and G.C. Cash. So, there is evidence of a middle initial of C.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a copy of Gabriella's death certificate which shows she died June 10, 1920 at age 61 years, 10 months and 20 days. That would mean she was born about 31 July 1859.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 1850 Clarke Co., AL census R.J. Singleton is shown to be a 33 year old male farmer from South Carolina. With him are Winifred, age 23 female from Alabama and Margaret, age 1 female born in Alabama.

The 1860 census of Meridian, Bosque County, Texas shows a Robert J. Singleton, age 43, with wife Winfred age 32; and children Margaret age 11; Harriet M. age 8, Sarah age 3; and Ella age 1. It lists Robert as being born in South Carolina and Winfred and children born in Alabama. Living with them were Moses Steanam, male age 27 born in Alabama; and Georgia, female age 19 also born in Alabama.  Two households down the list we find Wm. H. Bridges, physician, male age 35 born in Georgia with his family.

The 1870 census of Meridian, Bosque County, Texas shows R.J. Singleton age 53 with wife, Winfred age 43, and children Harriet age 18, Sarah age 12, and Gabriella age 11.

In the 1880 census for Bosque County, Texas Milton Cash is listed as age 32. Also listed are wife Ella, age 20, son John age 3, daughter Winnie age 2, daughter Bell age 2 months, and brother Henry H. age 30.

_________________________________________________________________________

BIOGRAPHY written by Audra Cash Covington January, 1987.

" John Singleton Cash was the eldest of seven children, five boys

and two girls, born to Milton Guy Cash and Gabriella Campbell.

When John was in his teens the family moved to Floyd County, Texas

where John, as he grew older, worked as a cowboy.  After his marriage

to Hattie Alice Allmon in 1902, John continued as a cow puncher and

for the next five years they lived on various ranches in Kent County,

Spur, Dickens, Abilene and Big Spring. During this time John and

Hattie had their first two children, Audra Alice in 1903 and Floyd

Clifton in 1905.

In 1907, tiring of life on the range, John moved his family to

Westbrook, Texas where he went into the real estate business with two

partners, Clark and Andrews.  Shortly after, during a trip to Mexico

on a real estate venture, John became involved with Pancho Villa, a

Mexican bandit and guerilla fighter who was to be considered a hero to

the Mexican people for his actions in the Revolution of 1910.  From

late 1907 and 1908 John was reportedly helping to obtain guns for

Pancho Villa's movement toward the Revolution and was away from his

family much of the time only seeing them for short periods. At some

point during this time it is known that John was imprisoned in Mexico

and released only after his family relinquished an undetermined amount

of money to the government of then dictator Porfirio Diaz.  History

records that Villa was captured by Diaz in 1909, this seems to

coincide with the time of John's capture.

Meanwhile, Hattie and the children returned to live with her

parents, who had moved to Petersburg, Texas.  John returned and in

August of 1910 their third child, Frances Elizabeth, was born.  In

1911 John borrowed a covered wagon and moved his family again.  This

time to Post Texas, a small town owned by C.W. Post of Battle Creek,

Michigan-Home of Post Toasties.

John went to work for the Double U Company selling "Post Home

Farms" on the caprock of Texas.  Among the first to buy farms were his

father and three of his brothers, Bert, Cloyd and Guy. John, always a

handsome man with a knack for dressing well (his trademark was a large

white cowboy hat) had an outgoing personality and prospered in the

business. In 1914 when local sales slowed, the company sent John, Dr.

A.R. Ponton and another agent to South America to buy land.  This was

at the time when construction on the Panama Canal had just been

completed.  John was among the first to pass through the canal. He

made two trips - one lasting three months, and returned home each time

with gifts for the family and lots of interesting stories about the

people in South America.

In 1917 when World War I began, John told his family he wanted to

go into service and left his family again with the Allmons.  A short

time later Hattie received a letter from him postmarked Amarillo,

Texas.  She never divulged the contents of the letter and John never

returned.

It was later learned that John spent some time around 1919 again

as a sympathizer in the cause of Pancho Villa, who in 1920 was retired

by the Mexican government as a general.  Some time later it was

learned that John was working in a shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia."

I don't have anything except the names of Bert & Katie's children.  This branch of the family descends from Samuel Bullock who moved to TX and I descend from his twin brother Lemuel who settled in MS. The only info I have for the TX branch came from a book written by John Hamilton Bullock, Katie Lenora's brother.  It was published in 1972.  The book lists her children as Odetta and Earl, but nothing else.
