General information about Indonesia

Singapore is located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula at the narrowest point of the Strait of Malacca, which is the shortest sea route between India and China. Its major natural resources are its location and its deep-water harbor.

The People

Singapore’s population is ethnically diverse. Chinese represent the majority with about three-fourths of the population. Malays are the second largest group, and Indians being the third largest.

The Languages

Singapore has four official languages; Chinese, English, Malay, and Tamil.

The Government

The government of Singapore is a parliamentary democracy.

In 1959, United Kingdom designated Singapore a crown colony, and Singapore became a self-governing state in the Commonwealth of Nations. It joined the Federation of Malaya, North Borneo (renamed Sabah), and Sarawak in 1963 to form Malaysia.  In 1965 Singapore separated from Malaysia and became a sovereign state within the Commonwealth of Nations.
