The American Chestnut tree was the dominant tree of the eastern forest, 1 of every 4 trees was a chestnut until blight struck in the early 1900's. Many animals depended on the chestnuts for food. Susan Freinkel wrote a book in 2007 American Chestnut: The Life, Death, and Rebirth of a Perfect Tree. New Hope for the American Chestnut. Since the 1980's science has been attempting to restore the trees as discussed October 20, 2009 in USA Today. About.com discusses its comeback. Wikipedia mentions isolated populations. I saw a few in Wisconsin in 1994. American Chestnut Foundation.
The American Elm tree is another causality of disease - Dutch Elm Disease.

Maidstone-on-the-Potomac is a c.1741 historic house and farm near Falling Waters, West Virginia. Located on the Potomac River immediately opposite Williamsport, Maryland, built by Evan Watkins, who operated Watkins Ferry on the Potomac, which was used by George Washington and General Edward Braddock.
