Among the professional and business men listed for Harlan County in 1896 Gazette mentioned a couple of columns ago were four first cousins and the husband of yet another cousin, grandchildren of Andrew [see correction to Adron Howard in column #56] and Hannah Lewis Howard.

Samuel Clay Howard was born about 1849, the son of Wilson and Rebecca Pace Howard, he was a hotel keeper for many years in Mount Pleasant, later known as Harlan. His wife Emily Jane Smith was born about 1858.

Samuel's cousin Henry L. Howard was a lawyer. He was born Jan. 21, 1847, son of Andrew and Anne Creech Howard. His first wife, Eleanor, daughter of John and Delia Noe Lewis, died in April of 1880 at the age of 33. He then married Nancy, a daughter of William Martin Sergent and his wife Elizabeth Howard. Nancy died in 1892, age 30 years old. Four year later, Henry married for the third time to Eliza M. Kelly, born about 1874.

Henry L. Howard was prominent in politics for many years in Harlan and served as commonwealth attorney, deputy circuit court clerk as well as assisting the county court clerk. He died in 1920.

Henry L.'s sister Susan was born about 1849. Her husband, William C. Lloyd Huff was a lawyer and operated a flour mill at the turn of the century in Harlan. W. C. L. was born about 1847, the son of Isaac and Elizabeth Lewis Huff. He served for many years as county court clerk.

Another of the cousins, Jesse W. Howard, was born about 1847, the son of Adron and Mary Coldiron Howard. in 1896, he operated a livery stable in Mount Pleasant. His wife Arathia, about 13 years younger than he, was the daughter of Robert and Lucinda Bingham Howard.

Jesse had previously been in partnership in a general store with his brother Lewis. Lewis died in 1882 and left their partnership in the store to Jesse, to be carried on in Jesse's name without the need for any sale of the business.

He also left all his property to his brother Jesse for the use and benefit of Lewis's four children: William Tecumseh Sherman Howard, Telitha Howard, Sarah Martely Howard and Harmen L. Howard. William T. was Lewis's only son by his first wife, Rachel, daughter of William and Leah Lewis Coldiron. The three younger children were by his second wife, Mary, daughter of John and Nancy Caldwell Blanton.

Jesse's brother Silas J. Crittenden Howard was another of Harlan's several lawyers. He was born about 1845. His wife Emily Morris was born about 1850. S. J. C.'s sons Daniel and Elijah became barbers in Mount Pleasant.

Another son, Thomas H. followed in his father's footsteps and was already listed as a lawyer in 1896 at the age of 25. His wife Nancy was born about 1878.
