Divorce Notes

from cases at the Kentucky State Archives

The following are notes made from divorce cases in the Harlan Circuit Court records. Most do not indicate whether or not the divorce was actually granted although most apparently were. The Box number will aid you in retrieving the case file from the Archives should you wish to do so. We would love to hear more about any of these.

Married 17 Sep 1886, separated 8 Dec 1886; she states he abandoned her

Married 15 Jul 1886 until 28 Sep 1887; lived first on his father's land, about 6 months, then her father's (Joseph & Susan Blanton)

judgement May 1886; he says she has one child he does not think belongs to him; her answer admits to all and to adultery with James Middleton

filed Nov 1888; md in 1869, together until July 1888; she says he "took up with another woman and brought her back to his house and lived with said woman openly and notoriously" (Elizabeth Brock)

filed 24 Sep 1866; she says he abandoned her after one month of marriage and that they have lived apart over 5 years; in April of 1866, proof to the court that Jackson D Long is a non-resident of the state

April 1866; she says that after many years she took up with another man and that they have not cohabited for about 8 years

filed 3 Sep 1865, answer filed 28 Apr 1866; he says she left him and "went to a seceded state" more than 12 years ago; she says this is true and that she is now living with another man

filed 30 Apr 1866, he states that she left him and lives in adultery and has had 2 children since, at least one by a "Williams man from Tennessee

Joel Hendrixson vs Emly Hendrixson
filed 7 Mar 1866, he states that she left him and is now living in adultery, it appears that during the war while he was away (Union service), she sold off his personal property and went to live with another man

filed 27 Sep 1866; her answer states that she left him 12 years ago and never intends to return and she is now in Virginia

about 1866; he says she abandoned him

Granville Smith vs Leanah Smith
filed 14 Oct 1870; he states that they were married about 10 years ago (about 1860) and they became dissatisfied 6-7 years ago and separated and that he thought he was divorced from the "bonds of matrimony" and married another woman but the divorce was "from bed and board only"
