A close reading of the roster finds some generalities: Several of the men had previously served in the Harlan County Battalion which dispersed sometime in late spring/early summer of 1863. Enrollment for the 47th's Company F was begun in July of 1863 and the unit itself was mustered in at Irvine KY on the 2nd of October 1863.

From the birthplaces given, it can be seen that most of the men were from Harlan County, and in fact from census and other records, it can be seen that most of them were from the Martins Fork/Cranks Creek area of the county and were in fact mostly relatives, friends and neighbors of Captain Henry Skidmore. Several of those whose birthplaces are listed as other than Harlan County had moved here form elsewhere prior to the war, some were here by 1850.

From dates and places mentioned in the roster, it seems that the unit camped at Irvine KY in October and then moved to Camp Nelson from November thru January. In February and March of 1864 they were camped at or near Booneville. By May they were at Paris KY. It is not known at this time what action they may have seen during or after this time period. Although enrolled for a 12 month term, they served closer to 15 months before being mustered out 26 Dec 1864 at Lexington KY.

Unless otherwise stated, all were enrolled at Irvine, Kentucky, by Captain Skidmore for a one year term; occupation farmer. Information in ( ) is editorial addition.
