The Late Unpleasantness, Civil War in Southeast Kentucky
A trial for the entire nation, the Civil War was especially difficult in the border regions such as south eastern Kentucky where brother against brother was a literal truth. Much has been written and published about other border regions during the Civil War but as there were no major battles, no momentous raids by guerillas, little appears about these mountain counties in print. This site hopes to remedy this somewhat by providing local information and source data, Civil War history and traditional area stories and links to further research.

Unit Rosters

 Units on both sides of the Civil War were organized initially in neighborhoods thus, most of the men enlisting knew each other or were relatives. One way to find what unit your ancestor served in is to check the rosters of units in which others in the area served. Your ancestor may have died during or in the years following the war and no information has come down as to what unit he served in... but, his neighbor may have served in a particular unit and if you check that roster you may find your own ancestor. This site is building a collection of rosters from this area and links to others.

1890 Vets Census

 When the 1890 regular census was taken, the census takers were also directed to prepare a special schedule of Union veterans and widows of veterans. When the 1890 census itself was destroyed by fire, the 1890 Special Schedule was also partially destroyed. Schedules survive for all states falling alphabetically after Kentucky and for about half of Kentucky. Fortunately for south east Kentucky, all the then existing counties have surviving schedules. The schedule was intended only for Union veterans but some confederates slipped on to the list, usually later crossed out.

This site has a two fold goal, one, posting transcripts of the actual schedules for the southeast Kentucky counties and then adding notes as to family information about each and everyone listed. Contributions of information on individuals listed is welcome. Watch for the links below to turn color as the data is added to the site.

How to get pension and other records...

The primary source for military pension records, including the Civil War, is of course the National Archives. You can obtain the NATF-80 forms for ordering pension records by e-mail request. Simply send an e-mail to [email protected], put the word Form in the subject line and include your snail-mail address. Most people requesting forms this way have gotten the forms within a few days.

KYGenWeb & USGenWeb

 In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. If you are interested in helping with any part of the KyGenWeb project, please contact Nancy Trice.

As KYGenWeb grew, people with genealogy interests in other states picked up the ball and USGenWeb was born. Now, all 50 states are represented and most US counties have web sites.... out of a small acorn, a mighty oak has grown.
