Union County South Dakota Genealogy

Cole County was created from unorganized lands in the Dakota Territory on 10 April 1862. On 1 July 1862, the county seat was established at the home of J. Chappillion.. The name of the county was officially changed to Union County, the county seat was moved to Richland, and additional land was annexed from Lincoln County on 7 January 1864. The county seat was moved to its present location, Elk Point, on 30 April 1865.

About the South Dakota GenWeb Project

In June, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the South Dakota Comprehensive Genealogy Database similar to the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database founded by Jeff Murphy. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in South Dakota, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
