The
South Dakota Bureau of Land Management Database was
extracted from data generously provided by the Bureau of Land
Management. It includes every homestead, mining and timber claim, as
well as cash sales and Indian allotments from 1859 to 1995. Not
included are parcels still owned by the U. S. Government, including the
Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Forest Service, and the National Park
System. The database comprises over 600,000
individual land records--totaling over 65 MB of raw text data!
The data is arranged by county, then surname of the land patent
purchaser. Each file contains information on how to order the patent
files from the National Archives. The BLM homestead site is back
on-line

About the South Dakota GenWeb Project
In June, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the SDGENWEB (The SouthDakota
Genealogical Website Project). The idea was to provide a single entry
point for all counties in South Dakota, where collected databases would
be stored. In addition, these databases would be indexed and cross
linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one
county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate
the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the
websites. The person responsible for this county is Mary Buchholz. Contact her if
you have any data to add to the Harding County Archives.
