My grandmother was confirmed in Alexandria's St Martin's Lutheran Church in 1895 as Maria Elisabeth (WALLPOLE) ELFERT. She was born, Mamie/Mary WALPOLE, in 1881, WY. It is said, her father, Peter WALPOLE, took one or two of the boys and abandoned the family. Her mother, Sarah, could not care for her so she gave her to the ELFERT's. Sarah remarried a man by the name of GOWLING and took Mary back. I am looking for this "unknown" GOWLING. My grandmother, Mary, who married Albert WILLIAMS in 1902 and settled in Worthington, MN, used both GOWLING and WALPOLE for maiden names on different documents. Thanks in advance.

Dewitt Clinton WRIGHT Born abt 1838 in Buck, PA Want to know if it is the same one listed in SD 1880 Census. Index indicated he was in 1880 Hanson Co Town 101 Range 57 049 of the South Dakota Census. I have not been able to see the census yet. Wonder if this WRIGHT is from PA and born about 1838. If so, he would be my lost great grandfather. Think he was listed as just Dewitt Wright. I would like information on the parents and siblings of Edward Fiske O'HARA. Edward F. was born in Hanson Co. on 20 Aug 1890. His father's name was John Fiske O'HARA and his mother's name was Anna Elizabeth POOLEY, according to a birth record filed in 1942. According to his social security account application, his mother's maiden name was POOLE. This was also filed about 1942. His parents were supposedly from PA. There was an Anna Elizabeth POOLEY born in Philadelphia, PA at about the right time. John might have been from Johnstown, PA. There is a rumor in the family that either Edward's father or his brother changed their last name somewhere along the line to something as generic as SMITHE. It is thought that this was due to the discrimation and persecution of the Irish immigrants. Edward was married twice that I know of. There was a daughter from the first marriage, Laura, born about 1919. He then married Thecla RIEDEL and had a son, Edward, born 1925.
