MELBURG posted by Chuck Melberg on Monday, July 3, 2000

I am attempting to find information on my paternal grandfather E.M. MELBURG, which the Brown County web site states was a pioneer of Brown County SD. E.M. MELBURG (Eliot or Elias) was born in Sweden apparently on August 24, 1854 or 1845. When my grandfather lost his wife in Minnesota in 1901, he placed his three children, including my father, in an orphanage. He wrote a few letters to his daughter from the Great Park Hotel in Great Falls Montana until 1906. He then disappeared without a trace. I found in Federal Census records that he immigrated to USA in 1869 and became a naturalized citizen. I found his marriage record in Fargo, North Dakota which gives only Sweden as his birth place. He was married on 20 March 1890 in Fargo, North Dakota. A daughter was born 18 July 1890. He lived in Minnesota. If you have information or suggestions that will help me determine a true history of my grandfather, it would be much appreciated. I am 75 years old and my children are very interested in our family history.

THEESFELD posted by Marcia Johnson on Thursday, July 6, 2000

RE: Westport, Brown County, South Dakota. Simon and Wilhelmina THEESFELD. Children: Anna; William; Henriette; Ted; and Henry. Simon and Wilhelmina are my grandparents who, according to family history, lived in Westport in July of 1910 but were back in Iowa in the fall. I would like to find out if they appear in the 1910 census of your area or if they slipped in between the cracks! When was the census taken that year? Could someone do a lookup to see if this family is in it. I doubt I would find any written documentation that places this family in Westport (probably on a farm) other than a possibility of being in the census. They were German (Ostfriesen) so am wondering if there was a big group of them who settled in that area. I cannot understand why they went so far except I know my grandfather was always searching for a better place to live. It would be fun to prove this bit of family lore. Thank you very much for any help.

I'm looking for information about the family of Hans Jorgen HANSON / HANSEN. Born in Denmark in 1836, Hans married Dorothea CHRISTENSEN or CHRISTIANSON and immigrated to USA in 1866. According to a county history article about their son Christen Hansen HJORTHOLM, they had 13 children. I've only been able to identify these: (1) Christen b.1865 Denmark (2) Matilda b.abt.1868 Wisconsin (3) Sena b.abt.1871 Wisconsin (4) Julia b.abt.1875 Wisconsin (5) Jane b.abt.1877 Wisconsin (6) Charlotte b.abt. 1884 South Dakota (7) Dagmar b.abt.1888 South Dakota The family moved to Brown Co, SD, sometime between 1877 & 1880. Both Hans & Dorthea died in Brown Co.--1901 & 1905, respectively. Does anyone have information about additional children, any descendants, or who these daughters married? Did any of the daughters carry the HJORTHOLM surname? I'll gladly exchange info I have about their son. Thank you.

EVERSON posted by Calvin Burns on Friday, July 28, 2000

I wrote you some time ago concerning my mothers family, her father was Henry D. EVERSON , his father was Ben EVERSON. I am sure you have heard of the EVERSON family (They were the 1st white settlers in Brown County.) I was in SD in June of this year and went by the old homesteds,Cemeteries, and the museum we were vary disappointed to find that the history of the EVERSON family is all but wiped out and much of the early history of Brown County and Columbia is not completely accurate. My mother has collected a great number of documents over the years and would like to set the record straight. Any help or information on this family would be appreciated.
