Welcome to the Fife Free Census Project. Our aim is to transcribe and put freely online the 19th century census returns for Fife.

We have completed [1] the transcription of the 1841 census. The 105,423 records are online and available for searching (see sidebar).

We have just completed the 1851 census. The last parish (Scoonie) went online in September 2012.

Footnotes

  1. In 1841 a small ferryboat sank in the Forth estuary, on its way to Edinburgh, and returns for fourteen Fife parishes were lost. These were Abdie, Auchtermuchty, Balmerino, Ceres, Collessie, Creich, Cults, Cupar, Dairsie, Dunbog, Kinghorn, Kinglassie, Kirkcaldy and Leslie.
  2. Some parishes (Arngask, Burntisland and Kennoway) are known to have missing books.
