FREE CENSUS PROJECT

This project is part of the U.K. Free Census (FreeCEN) project which aims to transcribe all the U.K. 19^th century census returns to create an on-line “free-to-view” database. This is part of an overall project that also covers the registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths (FreeBMD) and Parish Registers (FreeREG).

Project status

East Lothian 1841, 1851 and 1861 are all complete, online and searchable, with many thanks to the late Mary Hamilton and her team of volunteers.

Currently the project is paused as we await the sourcing of data for further census years. Please address any queries concerning the project to the Scotland coordinator, .

Volunteers wanted

The FreeCEN project is a global online venture for ordinary family historians who would like to make a personal contribution towards our great hobby. All you need to participate is a computer with a spreadsheet program and an image viewer. We supply all other software and files.

Volunteers are needed in a number of England and Wales counties, both for transcribing and for proofreading (checking). The areas which need volunteers can be found via the Volunteer link on the top menu of the FreeCEN site.
