Annan-Burgh Addresses 1859

These notes were written by former Dumfriesshire Coordinator, Tom Daly, who compiled the list below.

These addresses and streets are compiled from the Ordnance Survey Large Scale Town Plan of Annan from 1859. This plan was rendered on 25 sheets, 16 of which can be seen on the National Library of Scotland Digital Library of Scottish maps. Follow the links: Digital Library → Maps → Maps of Scotland → OS town plans → Browse Ordinance Survey town plans → Annan (1859). The sheet numbers shown below can be seen on the thumbnail of Annan. Clicking on a sheet brings up an overview of the sheet, and clicking on a part of the overview will zoom in on that place.

The individual sheets are surveyor’s charts, and have no subdivisions. To ease the finding of an item, the approximate location of the item is shown in the final column [Note: now shown as a graphic]. The first letter is for the Upper, Middle, or Lower third of the chart, and the second letter for the Left, Center, or Right third of the chart. Thus the indication LR refers to the Lower Right portion of the chart.

Please note that these locations are only approximate, and generally refer to the location of the name of the item, not necessarily to its entire extent. No attempt has been made to follow a road from sheet to sheet. Roads are only indicated on more than one sheet if the name appears on both sheets.
