Rumph Militia - Revolutionary War
Rumph Militia - Revolutionary War
Excerpted from "Times and Democrat," Monday 24 April 2000

Vic Fenton of Orangeburg, working as the veterans council historian, has managed to collect all the names of soldiers who died in all wars except the Revolutionary War. Records regarding those soldiers were lost when General W.T. Sherman marched through Orangeburg and destroy the county courthouse and most of the records contained therein.

Unless historical records surface, Fenton is prepared to include on a new war memorial in Edisto Gardens the names of all members of the Orangeburgh Militia. The militia was formed in 1799, led by Brigadier Gen. Jacob Rumph (Fenton's great-great-great-great- grandfather) to help stave off British troops.
