Most Orangeburg researchers have run into the Snells at one time or other in their research. They are one of the earliest families to settle the area, and appear to have been pretty extensively documented. But one branch, the descendants of Barnard Snell, left the area, and sometimes seems to get "short-changed" in discussions of the family. Maybe here we can put together more of the puzzle pieces and help complete the picture of the family of Henry Snell.

Barnard Snell was a Loyalist in the Revolutionary War, as were his sons by his second marriage, George, David and Daniel. Barnard's daughters, Nancy and Mary Magdalena, were married to men who also were Loyalists (Adam Fralick/Frolich and John Thornton respectively). These five children of Barnard fled the U.S. after the war ended; the British government relocated them to Nova Scotia. They filed claims for land there.

George and Daniel returned to the U.S. I'm not sure whether David, their sisters & their spouses returned. The brothers came first to Maryland. George remained in Maryland, married there (Rebecca MALOTT), and died in the mid-1800s in Washington Co., MD. Daniel married in MD (Edna MALOTT) and then moved to Clermont, Ohio in the early 1800s, where he died sometime after 1860 and is buried in the Williamsburg Cemetery in Clermont, OH. David never married; he was killed in the Battle of Lundy's Lane during the War of 1812. This battle occurred on 25 July 1814. I'm not sure whether he was fighting on the American or British side.
