About Us


The Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society is a nonprofit organization chartered as a charter member of the South Carolina Genealogical Society in January of 1985.  

Membership includes unlimited access to the Tompkins Library, receipt of the QUILL, the society's award winning bimonthly newsletter , membership in the South Carolina Genealogical Society and receipt of their Carolina Herald Newsletter, and research assistance and information exchange.  To join, mail the membership form with the appropriate dues.

The Tompkins Library has a tremendous collection of books on the history of Edgefield County as well her people and families.  It also has an extensive collection of Edgefield County related microfilm including issues of The Edgefield Advertiser newspaper back to 1836,  a huge collection of loose papers, and a major collection on other states whose people migrated into and out of Edgefield including:  Virginia, NC, GA, AL TX.  

Visit the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society located in the Tompkins Library at 104 Courthouse Square.  It is open Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Other days and hours by special appointment.  Call the Library at (803) 637-4010.

OEDGS Publishing Efforts Receive Recognition

An Award of Merit was presented to the OEDGS for its publishing efforts at the annual Landmark Conference banquet in Edgefield April 23, 2004.  Mentioned in the presentation was Tonya Taylor and Tricia Glenn's two-volume book Remembering Edgefield; the OEDGS book Edgefield County, SC, Family Cemeteries & Death Notices from the SC Baptist Newspaper; Tonya Taylor, David Taylor and Malissa Browder's compilation Abbeville, SC:  Records of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 2, and Quill, our bimonthly newsletter.  Congratulations to these recipients for the recognition of their excellent work.
