Holder in 1989 HISTORIC STRUCTURES ON THEIR ORIGINAL SITE BUT NO LONGER IN OCONEE COUNTY AS A RESULT OF THE ANNEXATION OF LANDS BY PICKENS COUNTY Until 1968, the Old Stone Church and the campus of Clemson University, including the home of John C. Calhoun on Fort Hill Street within the University, were part of Oconee County. The Old Stone Church, the John C. Calhoun home, and sections of many buildings on the Clemson University Campus are open to the public. Hopewell, the home of General Andrew Pickens during at least part of the 1790s, is also on Clemson University property. It currently serves as a private residence and is not open to the public. Location: To reach the Old Stone Church and Hopewell, follow Highway 76/123 east across the Seneca River (Lake Hartwell) into Pickens County. After crossing the bridge, go 1 and 1/10 miles and bear right onto Anderson Highway (Hwy. 76). Then proceed 2 miles and turn right onto Old Stone Church Road (Road 22). Immediately after turning onto Old Stone Church Road, another road (Stone Circle Rd.) turns back right and runs along the east side of the cemetery and to the church. To reach Hopewell, follow the above directions for reaching the Old Stone Church Road (Road 22). After turning onto Old Stone Church Road, proceed 1.05 miles along Old Stone Church Road and then turn left onto Old Cherry Road (Road 149). Travel 7/10 of a mile; a marker to the mid 1780s Hopewell Treaty with various Indian nations (including the Cherokee) will be on the right hand side of the road. The plantation home is through the woods on the left side of the road. To better see the structure from late fall through early spring, proceed past the Treaty Marker and cross Lake Hartwell. Turn around and cross the bridge a second time. The house sits atop a high bluff to the right as you return toward the Treaty Marker. To reach Clemson University, follow Highway 76/123 east across the Seneca River (Lake Hartwell) into Pickens County. After crossing the bridge, go 8/10 of a mile and turn right on College Avenue (Hwy. 133). College Avenue will take you to the Clemson Campus, easily recognizable by the tall brick tower of Tillman Hall. Signs point the way to the John C. Calhoun house. A campus visitors center is located within Tillman Hall.
