10TH REGIMENT, COMPANY A
10th REGIMENT SOUTH
CAROLINA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
The 10th Infantry
Regiment was organized at Camp Marion, White's Bridge near
Georgetown, South Carolina in July 1861. Its soldiers were
recruited from the counties of Georgetown, Horry, Williamsburg,
Marion and Charleston. The regiment moved first, to Cat Island
Redoubt, located between Winyah Bay and Santee River, where many
of the men suffered from typhoid fever, measels and mumps. In
March, 1862, the regiment was sent to Cornith, Mississippi, then
on to the Kentucky Campaign. They were involved in the
confederate victory of Munfordville in Kentucky, a station on the
Louisville and Nashville Railroad and the location of the
railroad bridge crossing Green River. During the war it was
assigned to General Manigault's and Sharp's Brigade, and from
September, 1863 to April, 1864, was consolidated with the 19th
Regiment. The unit served with the Army of Tennessee from
Murfreesboro, Stones River Campaign in Tennessee to the Atlanta
Campaign of 1864 in Georgia. They were among the bravest of the
heroes of that memorable Atlanta Campaign struggle, from Dalton
to Ezra Church. It then endured Hood's winter Campaign in
Franklin-Nashville, Tennessee. In 1865, the unit particiated in
the Campaign of the Carolinas in Bentonsville, Johnston County,
North Carolina. It lost 16 killed, 91 wounded, and 2 missing at
Murfreesboro, and the 10th/19th had 236 killed or wounded at
Chickamauga and totalled 436 men and 293 arms in December, 1863.
During the Atlanta Campaign, July 20-28, the 10th Regiment lost
19 of 24 officers engaged and surrendered on April 26, 1865 in
Bentonville, North Carolina, with no officers and 55 men.
