Equity Bills

1869 - 1870

On June 23, 2000, my cousin Dee Schmidt and I spent the day at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History in Columbia. While there, I decided to try out the search function on a computer available for patrons. I entered the search term "Clarendon," and browsed through the list of holdings at the archives. I came across a listing for Equity Bills that I had never seen before. I filled out a document request slip and what was brought out to me was a box of original court papers from Clarendon County. Many of these papers still had the string tied around the packets. It appeared that they have not been opened since being processed through the court in 1869 and 1870. Dee and I went through the box, searching for packets with surnames of our family. We found a few names of interest to us and opened those packets, but did not find any really new information on our family lines. Since we were going through and reading the outsides of all of the packets in the box, and I had my laptop with me, I decided to type up the names listed on the outsides of the packets. Dee read the information out loud, and I typed it up. What you will find below are the notes that I took that day. They are in the order that we found the packets in the box. We hope that these notes will be of assistance to someone....Cindy Parker & Dee Schmidt
