Cemetery names will normally be listed in alphabetical order. Ex: Brown-Jones-Wilson Families

Surnames will normally come before given names. Ex: Brown Family, John

Plantation names were not ordinarily shown on the Census. Using plantation names to locate ancestors can be difficult because the name of a plantation may have been changed through the years and because the sizeable number of large farms must have resulted in lots of duplication of plantation names.

Plantation nicknames names, if known, will normally be listed as aka (also known as).

It's assumed that if a plantation had over 100 enslaved workers, that there would have normally been a separate cemetery for them. Often landowner's family graves might be located nearby, but always kept separate.

Plantation homes were often burned after slave emancipation, because the landowner could no longer afford to pay their land taxes.

Historical home locations can normally be determined by locating their existing foundations.

Research Notes:

The origin of the name Edgefield is not clear, although it is usually described as "fanciful." The county was formed in 1785 as part of Ninety Six District; parts of Edgefield later went to form Aiken (1871), Saluda (1895), Greenwood (1897), and McCormick (1916) counties. The county seat is the town of Edgefield. This part of the upcountry, settled in the late eighteenth century, was the site of several Revolutionary War skirmishes. Although primarily agricultural, Edgefield County developed a thriving pottery industry in the nineteenth century; the old alkaline-glazed Edgefield pottery is highly sought after today. The larger Edgefield County was the home of ten South Carolina governors, including Francis W. Pickens (1805-1869), Benjamin R. Tillman (1847-1918), and Strom Thurmond (1902-2003). Confederate general Martin Witherspoon Gary (1831-1881) was also a resident of Edgefield County. (Submitted by: SC State Library / Mary Morgan, 31-Mar-2008)

Parent County/Boundary Changes

1785 - Thirty-three counties were created within existing South Carolina Districts. Abbeville County was created within Ninety-Six District.

1800 - Abbeville was re-christened a district and Ninety-Six District was abolished.

1868 - Abbeville and all other districts became counties.

1897 - Greenwood County was created from Abbeville and Edgefield Counties.

1898 - Greenwood County gained from Abbeville and Edgefield Counties.

1916 - McCormick County was created from Abbeville, Greenwood, and Edgefield Counties.
