This cemetery is located in the Colston Community of Bamberg County, South Carolina, just across Indian Camp Branch from the home of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Valentine McMillan, Bamberg County, S.C.
Mary Adaline McMillan, the 28 year old daughter of Captain Henry William McMillan and Sophia ("So-Fi-Yah") Delilah Faust, was the first member of the McMillan family to be buried in Shady Rest Cemetery on June 27, 1856. Seven of their fifteen children are buried in Shady Rest.
It has been said by the old ones, that at the time Mary Adaline McMillan died, Indian Camp Branch was flooded. Captain McMillan claimed that due to the flooded condition, he could not get the body across the stream so that she could be buried in the James McMillan Cemetery.
Of Capt. & Mrs. McMillan's eight sons, six fought in the War between the States. Two of their sons who fought are buried in the Old Union Methodist Ch. Cemetery, near Cope, S.C. Capt William Franklin McMillan and Sgt. Carey Columbus McMillan.
