Latitude N x Longitude W CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ In 1792 Stephen Leverett purchased this land in the Pendleton District from Philip Phagan. See Anderson County CC Register Mesne Conveyance Book D 1795- 1799; roll No. C942, 352,353. The microfilm was held by the SCDAH in the summer of 1999. Stephen Leverett b1765 Lunenburg Co VA d 1853 Anderson Co., SC never left the land. County boundaries changed and Anderson was created from Pendleton District as you know. Stephen and his family are the known Leverett burials in this Old Leverett Cemetery near Iva. There is a John T. McKee b1786 d? buried in the cemetery. Gene Schneider, a volunteer associated with the Anderson Co Museum of Anderson, told me about this burial. A visit to the cemetery earlier this year was made by me. Research has shown that this McKee was an adjacent landowner. In August 1963 D. G. Casey, Reg. L.S. #1115 surveyed this cemetery. At the time the cemetery was completely surrounded by land owned by Mrs. Miriam O. Shaw. My cousin, Margie Leverett Casey (wife of D. G. Casey, deceased) stated on the copy of the survey "now Leverett's" The survey also states the land is located in "State of South Carolina, county of Anderson, Hall Township, School District #3". I do not know when the land was purchased by Mrs. Shaw. I do not have a copy of the deed showing the Casey's purchase of the surveyed cemetery land. The Anderson County Public Library as well as the Anderson County Museum have material I gave to them regarding the Anderson, SC, Leverett family. Photographs of the burials are at the museum. I am a 7th generation Leverett researcher.
