But in our history summation, the record began in 1851, when the congregation was racially mixed as what is now known as Mountain Creek Baptist Church, located on Highway 29 South. Subsequently part of the congregation, still racially mixed, was moved to what is now known as Shiloh Baptist Church (located at the intersection of Hwy. 29 South and Hwy. 187 S.). After reconstruction, the congregation divided racially and after Mrs. Gertrude McGee deeded land to the black congregation for what became Generostee Negro Baptist Church. There is also a discrepancy in the spelling of the pastor's name. In our recorded history, the name is listed as Rev. Belk Lindsay. I'm not sure which spelling is actually correct. This is very interesting. We have no record of the dimensions of the first building here on site. Thank you for sharing this info with me. By: Mary Harris o----------o The following history information was taken from the Inventory of Church Archives of Churches 1935. By: E.E. Vaughn Generostee Negro Baptist 16 miles SW Anderson, Starr Rt. 1 Organized 1884 1st log 1884; 2nd wooden frame 1884 - 1939, built 1939, wooden frame 34 X 44, plain square windows and doors, no belfry or bell. Capacity 325, value of building $3000, value of land $100, total value $3100.00. First settled clergy Bell Lindsey, tenure 1884 -1886. This church was named Generostee because it is near Generostee Creek. o----------o Generostee Baptist Church History (1851-2006) - 155 Years!!! The Generostee Baptist Church is similar to the tree in the song. It shall not be moved. The origin of the church began during the ante-Bellum south, and that origin shows that this church is like a tree planted by the waters, full of everlasting life and full of giving and reviving life. The church was founded in 1851 under the guidance of Rev. Tony Jones. The congregation was racially mixed until 1865 - the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The Generostee Church was founded in 1851. The original church congregation was racially mixed. During this time in history, white slave masters allowed their black slaves to attend church services and study certain parts of the Bible. This was an attempt on the masters' part to keep the slaves from practicing some of their traditional rituals. As news spread regarding the freedom of slaves, a lot of problems developed between the masters and the slaves. This was the major reason for the church separating. Many of the slave owners that setting slaves free would put them as equals to the white man. In 1865 under Rev. Tony Jones, the Generostee Baptist Church, (an all black congregation) was formed. From its initial existence to the present date, the church has had a total of only twelve pastors. The former pastors were Reverend Tony Jones, Reverend Belk Lindsay, Reverend Williams Lindsay, and Reverend Perry Thompson, Reverend Scott Jones, Reverend Dennis Glenn, Reverend W.H. Seiglar, Reverend H.W.D. Stewart, Reverend A.T. Lomax, Dr. W.B. Hawks, Dr. M.P. Robertson, and our present pastor, Reverend Ronnie Williams. These fine pastors brought our church into the 20th century. As a result of their faithful and dedicated leadership we were able to: operate a school to help educate our Negro children, construct a sanctuary for worship service, and install electrical wiring and plumbing systems. In the early 1930's Generostee Baptist Church was instrumental in organizing a singing convention. Because of the important role our church played in organizing this convention, the churches voted to name this convention: The Generostee Baptist Church Singing Convention. The major focus of this convention was to help surrounding churches in the Anderson area become familiar with what is called "note singing" or "meter singing". As a child we used to refer to it as the DO RA ME singing. Generostee has grown from a modest little one-room church to a growing edifice. This growth rate is due to the great leaders and the devoted members that God has blessed the church with. Two of our previous pastors and our present pastor have spearheaded a number of the improvements here. Dr. W.B. Hawks, our tenth pastor, served for twenty-five years (1962-1987) until his death on February 21, 1987. Under his leadership we experienced a number of achievements: three hundred ninety nine members were added to the church; seven ministers were ordained; the interior of the church was renovated; new pews and chairs were added, the mortgage was burned in 1981; a new parking lot was constructed; a central air conditioning unit and a sound system were installed; and twenty auxiliaries were formed. Dr. M.P. Robertson, the interim pastor from 1987 to January 1988, also assisted and made substantial contributions to the church. He was responsible for the painting of the interior and the exterior of the church; new carpet was installed; Reverend Michael Sullivan was ordained on June 14, 1987; and thirteen new members were added. Also under Dr. Robinson's leadership and guidance, the Reverend Stephon Gilliard delivered his trial sermon on November 8, 1987. Our present pastor, Reverend Ronnie Williams' blessed and strong leadership is in keeping with the tradition of the leadership that the church has known through the years. Reverend Williams began his pastoral duties on January 31, 1988. With his guidance and devotion the church has grown by leaps and bounds. Some of the achievements under Rev. Williams include new lights for the sanctuary, copy machine, microwave oven, three ceiling fans for the dining area, a tape ministry, church parsonage, church van, piano and organ, first aide room, New paneling for the sanctuary, tithe box, sound system; hundreds of members have been added to the church & to accommodate this new growth, the present sanctuary was remodeled in 1992 (And God blessed us to pay off this debt and burn the mortgage in 1999); 15 members have been called into the ministry; Roger Rivers, Harris Clark, Harry Humphrey, Betty Humphrey, James Hopkins, Susie Davis, Virginia Jenkins, Horace Alexander, Janice Butler, Leopold Butler, Cliff Thomas, James Scott, Felicia Speed, Fyead Galloway, & Scottie Gaines. Other Ministers that has joined the church are Rev. James Henderson and the late Rev. Connis Gleaton. We thank God for our past and present pastors, but we know that the foundation of our church is the members. Our church has been blessed with some of the most devoted, loving, and caring people. A number of our members have made generous contributions to the church, and a large percentage of our members make the ultimate contribution - a contribution that cannot be conveyed or captured on paper. Time. A number of our members devote time and service to this church, and we cannot thank them enough, for they are truly one of the main reasons for the church's continuous growth. As the church celebrates another milestone, we the members. of Generostee pray for God's speed and the church's continuous growth. "Like a tree planted by the water, (Generostee) shall not be moved." In the preparation for the celebration, more facts about the church's beginning surfaced. From court records it appears that land was purchased in 1826 by a Baptist society for the building of Generostee Creek Meeting House. Undoubtedly, this was the origination of the white church, but as stated in the introduction, the now Generostee Baptist Church, like most "old" Black churches in America, originated from the white church. So we can speculate from the date of 1826 and the history of the United States that our fore parents (slaves) probably had some kind of interaction-attending it with the master; cleaning it for the master; and/or building it for the master-with that first church in 1826. So the history of the now Generostee Baptist Church is seemingly older than we thought. Afterthought: In August 2001 Generostee had a groundbreaking celebration. In September the groundwork began for the manifestation of the `vision'. And in the years since, God has continued to bless. We have been able to establish a Church Logo and web site (http://www.generostee.com) by which all can see the continuing progress of Generostee Baptist Church. A new parking area was completed with additional lighting & the effective grading of the property has made way for the dynamic landscaping project. This building was dedicated to God for the uplifting of His Kingdom on August 24, 2003. It is our prayer that God continue to bless GBC (as so many of the members now call the church) to grow and reach those that seek His salvation. In September of 2003, on our 152"d Church Anniversary, God blessed us to dine together for the first time in our newly renovated dining area, (the former sanctuary of Generostee Baptist Church). Generostee has been blessed with a growth of 462 members under the leadership of Pastor Williams thus far. Added to the list of ministers now licensed under Pastor Ronnie Williams, are Minister Donald Clinkscales and Minister Joseph Lafayette Groves, Minister Patricia Owens, Rev. Janice B Williams, Minister. Daniel Holloway, Minister Albert Butler. Minister Lillie Brown, & Minister Ethel Bates have also joined the list of ministers here at Generostee. ---------- A historical account provided by Dr. Williams Everly, a beloved & respected educator of this area: Mr. Everly came to Generostee's School in the early 1940's, when the school was brand new, having just moved out of the church where classes had been conducted prior to this time. Mr. Everly served under Mrs. Josephine Jones for three years at which time Mrs. Jones decided to transfer to Iva's school district, which was closer to her home. Having gained the confidence of some influential trustees (Mr. Charles Gray, Mr. Jim Henry Cowans, & Mr. Clarence Gilliard), Mr. Everly was persuaded to assume the role of Principal of Generostee, a decision that was embraced by Mr. Paul Earl. Because Generostee like New Deal was one of the larger Black three-teacher schools in the area, Mr. Everly then enlisted the teaching services of Ms. Grace Reed (later to become Mrs. Grace Reed Smith), who had also assisted Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Mamie Lou James. Some school enrolment grew so as to require an additional teacher at which time Mr. Everly hired a third teacher. As a matter of record, Mr. Everly, assisted by several agricultural students that had returned from their tour of duty in World War II, built the pump house that housed the well in front of the schoolhouse.
