A larger church was built on the property which is being used as the primary Church today. As I was told, a few of the oldest graves were moved to the current cemetery from beyond a hill behind the church. During renovations it was discovered underneath the floors actual sections of trees were used as the floor footings and not lumber. By: Wendy Campbell o----------o DORCHESTER BAPTIST CHURCH November 16, 2003 Dorchester Baptist Church was organized May 3, 1832 by a group of about forty members of Big Creek, Neals Creek, and Hopewell Churches. Dorchester was originally located two miles northwest of Belton, South Carolina on the Columbia and Greenville Railroad. The Church was the know as the " Rock Creek Brush Arbor". Rev. Robert King , Known my many as "Uncle Bob" was the first Pastor; he served until 1859. The name of the church was changed July 1832 to Dorchester Baptist Church. Shortly after the organization of the church a house of worship was built for the sum of $300. 1848- The Sunday School was begun. 1854- A great revival was experienced in which forty persons confessed faith in Christ. 1860- Rev. B. F. Mauldin of Willamston, South Carolina was called as Pastor. William Holmes, and several other members, obtained Letters of dismissal, and organized the First Baptist Church of Belton. 1861- Rev. W. P. Martin was called as Pastor and served until 1867. During this time Dorchester had forty-three professions of faith. 1870- Under the leadership of Pastor Robert King, Dorchester sponsored the Cedar Grove Mission Until it was constituted as a church. 1886- During the second Pastorate of Rev. G. M. Rogers the present activity building was constructed. Dedication services were held on the fourth Sunday of April 1889. 1892- Rev. D. W. Hiott was called as Pastor at a salary of $200 per year for one Saturday and one Sunday in each month. 1895- Rev. J. L. Fields served as Pastor for nine months until he accepted a call to serve as Pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Athens, Georgia. 1916- The Women's Missionary Union was organized. 1920- 1930 Dorchester had afternoon services. The people were recovering from World War I, and the depression. Thirty-five to forty faithful members kept the church together. 1932- Dorchester celebrated it 100th Anniversary. M.M. McCuen was Pastor. 1944- Dedication services for members serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. A bronze plaque was placed At the front of the church, and is still displayed. 1947- Rev. L.G. Hall led the church to construct six Sunday School rooms. These were completed in 1948. Harold Bowe became Dorchester's first Full-time Pastor. 1951- Dorchester purchased a parsonage near the Dorchester Cross Road. 1952- Training Union was organized during the ministry of Rev. John Bryant. Four additional Sunday School rooms were built. 1962- A new church building was constructed and dedicated, under the pastorate of Rev. Jack Hatchell, for the cost of $60,000. The Membership was 300 at this time. The parsonage Was sold after Rev. Hatchell resigned in 1963. 1969- Under the leadership of Rev. C. E. Price, Jr. a new education building was built and financed with bonds purchased by church members, at the cost of $40,000. Ground was broken for the building November 14, 1971. 1982- A new parsonage was purchased at 402 Park Road in Belton. 1983- Dorchester called Roger Mullikin, its first paid Minister of Music. Rev. Jimmy Smith was called As the first full-time Pastor in fifteen years. 1985- A tape ministry for shut-ins was started by Mr. Walter Lee Edwards. A Bond Program Financed the remodeling of the Activity [building At a cost of $25,000. 1986- A Homecoming Service was held to lay a cornerstone which will be opened in 2032, Dorchester's 200' Anniversary. In November 1986 Dorchester hosted Associational M-Night, with Dr. Alaster Walker as Guest Speaker. 1987- Rev. Dan Logan preached his first sermon. 1989- Rev. Dan Logan passed away from cancer on July 7, 1989. 1989- Rev. Royce Addis was called as Pastor of Dorchester Baptist Church. 1991- Rev. Royce Addis resigned. 1992- Rev. Rick Baldwin was called as Pastor of Dorchester Baptist Church. 1993- Rev. Rick Baldwin went on a mission trip to England. 1994- Rev. Rick Baldwin, and several members of Dorchester, went on a mission trip to Moldova. More than 200 people came to accept Christ as Result of this trip. 1995- Robert Davis became the first full-time Minister of Music, Youth, and Children. 2000- Rev. Don Smith was elected on April 26, 2000. 2000- The Old Baptismal Pool behind the old church, was restored and dedicated on September 26, 2000. 2001- Cindy Hayden served her first Sunday as part-time Minister of Music on February 25,2001. 2002- Gary Fisher was ordained to the Ministry on July 14, 2002. 2003- Rev. Don Smith resigned after serving 3'/2 years, on October 12, 2003. Rev. Gene Price, a former Pastor, was elected as Interim Pastor on October 26,2003.
