From time to time people share their difficult Vanalstine puzzles with me and we find that no easy answer can be found. Having recently worked on Major Peter Vanalstine and his nieces, I became curious about the relationship between the many Van Alstine loyalist settlers in early Upper Canada. Perhaps this collection below will provide a useful map of the early Vanalstine settlers for researchers. This page is about the Vanalstine settlers in the east in Richmond and Fredericksburgh Townships of Lennox and Addington County and those in the west in Niagara and Grantham Townships in Lincoln County. Information about Major Peter Vanalstine is presented on the separate page linked above.

    1. OVERVIEW
There are many loyalist petitions of people named Vanalstine. After googling around and checking well known books, it appears that it is not clear how all these families and individuals are connected. Below are the contemporary records found for the people who are named in the list above. More information is welcome to put better clarity to the story.

The focus here is on the first two generations of loyalists and their children and trying to sort out the relationship between them all. A few new people and facts have emerged making this effort worthwhile. The petitions are quite detailed and they are the bed rock against which later works are compared. Two other significant sources are used as an aid in figuring out the lineages.
    1. The first are the papers of Dr. H.C. Burleigh that are kept at Queen's University and are on line here in the Vanalstine folder of the Dr H.C. Burleigh Fonds. There are 238 pages of notes from a wide variety of sources some of which are cited. The Burleigh papers only involve the eastern part of the family and are well worth examining. They will be referred to as the "Burleigh Fonds." Burleigh does not cite where his lineage charts come from and it is possible that he had contact with living family in the 1950's that could inform him of relationships.
    2. The second source is the Van Alstyne - Van Alstine Family History, Vol 1, Lester Van Alstine, 1974 and it will be referred to as "VAFH."
    3. In January 2021, a third document came forward that fits into the story in a confirming way. It is an account of the Van Alstyne family before coming to America and then follows a line through Lambert (1710) and son James (1738) down to the author; Charles Philander Smith Van Alstyne. A pdf is presented here.
    What are the family groupings?
The Richmond Township group [section 2] is composed of the father Lambert and sons Isaac and James and their children. Parts of this family cluster also settled in Fredericksburgh.

The Niagara and Grantham Township group [section 3] is the family of Harmonius Vanalstine and his older sons who are loyalists in their own right and then his younger children who are sons and daughters of Harmonius.

Robert Vanalstine of Kingston is a loyalist as well and nothing more is known about him.

How are these family groupings connected?
Dr Burleigh clearly worked on this question in the 1950's [page 22 is dated 1959] and he successfully figured out how the Lambert Vanalstine family of Richmond Tp was related to Major Peter Vanalstine of Adolphustown Tp. The Burleigh Fonds has several pages where this is worked out: page 22, page 34page 196, page 210 and 212. Burleigh's note on James Vanalstine and his many descendants is on page 190. Lester Vanalstine's book, Van Alstine Family History [VAFH] was published in 1974 and it includes this same lineage.

The chart below visually helps lay out this relationship. The progenitor of the Van Alstine's is Jan Martense Van Alstine who was born in Holland and came to New Amsterdam [New York city] before 1650 and later moved up to Albany where he was a trader. He and his wife had nine children. Only three sons are shown in the chart below: Herman, Abraham and Isaac. Note that Major Peter Vanalstine (b. 1743) is the grandson of Abraham and Lambert (b. 1710) is the son of Isaac. This makes the two men first cousins once removed. Peter grew up in Kinderhook in Dutchess County and Lambert grew up near Albany and they may have known each other.

That leaves Harmonious of Niagara to place in the chart.
Burleigh shows Harmonious as unplaced on page 34 so he was aware of this family. VAFH does not identify the Harmonious with his children who came to Upper Canada. See the Harmonious section for an argument that concludes that Harmonious was born about 1737. Examining VAFH yields two possibilities. Lambert (b. 1710) has a son Herman who was baptized in 1749 with no children listed. It is hard to imagine that this is the correct man. He would have to have been baptized as a 12 year old or so in order to have his son Jacob by 1757.

Not shown on the chart is the fact that Lambert (1710) has an older brother Herman who was baptized 1700. His children are listed in VAFH but there is no Herman/Harmanus as a son. This line looks promising with names like Bartholemew, Dorothy and Eva; names that show up in the Niagara line. Perhaps the Harmonious of Niagara is an unrecorded son of this line.

The remaining candidate in VAFH is the Harmanus born in 1738 and shown on the left of the chart below. VAFH gives no details beyond his baptism and placement in the family tree. He descends from Herman, another son of Jan Martense Vanalstine. For what it is worth, this Herman is being presented as the "Niagara man" and may be totally off base. An attempt to find a marriage and baptisms of his children might yield the needed support. No better alternative has been found.

Further in this Overview, it will be argued that the Harmonious and Lambert sides of the family lived far apart and were not close.

Who are the brothers of Lambert Sr (b. 1710) that died in the war?
In Lambert Sr's 1792 petition he states that he "had two brothers who served as privates in the first & second Battn of Royal Yorkers, they died." It is not known for certain who these brothers are but a good guess can be made. Note that in the 1781 roll below, a Jacob Vanalstine enlists in the 1st KRRNY and is named along with Lambert and Isaac. This is the only mention of Jacob and he could be one of the brothers. The other brother could be Simon Vanalstine who is shown in the 1782 roll of the 2nd KRRNY (see records for James [2B]). Simon enlists in 1780 a few months after Lambert and is still alive in Dec 1783. Jacob and Simon do not show up in post war records but do fit the statement that the two brothers served in the 1st and 2nd battalions of KRRNY. It is thus concluded that they are likely the two brothers who died during or just after the war. VAFH does name a Jochim as a brother of Lambert Sr but no Simon. This Jochim might be Jacob. There is no Simon named anywhere in VAFH.

Where on the Susquehanna did they come from?
There are a number of petitions stating that various members of the extended family lived on the Susquehanna before the war broke out.
    1. In 1788, Lambert Jr [2B2], grandson of Lambert Sr, personally attends the Loyalist Claims Commission and states that his grandfather Lambert Sr was from Litchfield, Connecticut and had moved to the Susquehanna before the war started in 1776.
    2. Also in a Loyalist claim, Lambert's son Isaac [2A] claims he "had 300 acres Land, Susquehanna, 5 years before the War."
    3. Lambert's other son, James is reported in an 1808 petition by his son Isaac [2B2xi] to have "resided at a place called Standing Stone, on the Susquehanna River in the province of Pennsylvania at the breaking out of the Rebellion ... ." This is Standing Stone Tp, Bradford Co., PA, about 60 miles north of Wilkes Barre, PA.
These 3 records place Lambert Sr and his two sons, Isaac and James on the Susquehanna and if they moved together the timing would have been about 1771, 5 years before the war broke out.

The Niagara group also have a connection with the Susquehanna. Bartholemew and Yockim (possibly his brother Jacob) are named on a 1778 roll of the Butler's Rangers as having enlisted "with a corps under Sir John Johnson and joined at Augquago on the Susquehanna River." The modern spelling of the village on the map of NY is Ouaquaga. The same location is also known by its Oneida village name, Onaquaga. The village is a little east of Binghamton and about 100 miles upriver of Standing Stone. This strongly suggests that the Niagara Vanalstines were not close to the Standing Stone group. Bartholemew and Jacob joined Butler's Rangers in 1778.

Susquehanna records for Lambert and his sons, Isaac and James
I thank Gavin Watt for sending me a copy of Identifying Loyalists on the Frontier; The Wyoming Valley Massacre, Stephen C. Young, Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, V 34, 2004, 293-324. This excellent article describes the early settlement history on the upper Susquehanna, called the Wyoming Valley, from Wilkes Barre, PA, north into New York State. The area was claimed by both New York and Connecticut and the conflict led to hostilities, Battle of Wyoming. The Susquehannah Company of Connecticut preserved many lists of people in the Wyoming settlements. Connecticut tax lists from 1776 and 1777 for "up the river" in Westmoreland County name "Old Vanalstine, Isaac Vanalstine and James Vanalstine" as settlers. Of the 479 men on the tax lists, 42 have been identified as loyalists and these three are among them. These tax lists were transcribed in a "List of Taxable Inhabitants in the Town and County of Westmoreland (Wyoming, PA), State of Connecticut, 1776-80", Proceedings and Collections of the Wyoming Historical and Genealogical Society, Vol 5, 1900, 205-18, online at archive.org.

Young's article includes a short biography of 4 Vanalstines (318-19). Below are the facts and citations recorded by Young.
    1. Isaac: b. 1741
      • settled on 300 acres on the upper part of the river about 1771 [Second Report of the Bureau of Archives, 1905, Alexander Fraser, 1030, on line at archives.org.]
      • "There were three or four brothers living in the neighbourhood of Standing Stone by the name Van Alstyne, who were connected by marriage with the Wintermute family of Wyoming. These young men were in ill repute among the Whigs [patriots] of the valley." [History of Bradford County, PA, David Craft, 1878, 51, 62, online at archive.org. See also A History of Wilkes Barre, Oscar Jewell Harvey, 6 vols, 1909, 861, 1049n]"
      • Isaac joined the KRRNY as a private in 1778.
      • "Below Wintermoot's it is not known that there was a single tory house or family. Above Wintermoot's extending to Wyalusing, the Tory families were scattered, their settlements being recent, holding but a partial intercourse, no sympathy existing between them and the Connecticut inhabitants. On a list ... of Col Butlers, containing 61 names, only 3 are from New England. The names are of a different people, Wintermoots, Larraways, Van Alstines, Secords, etc, from the Mohawk, Kinderhook, Minnisink and West Chester, New York."[ History of Wyoming, in a series of letters, from Charles Miner to his son William Penn Miner,  J. Crissy, 1845, 245 , online at archive.org]
    2. Jacob:
      • probably one of the 4 brothers referred to in some references [History of the Certified Township of Kingston, PA, 1769 to 1929, William Brewster, 1930, 138]
      • identifed as one of the Tories who lived on the upper Susquehanna, a former resident of Westmoreland (Harvey, cited as p. 45 but not found.)
      • not listed on the tax lists
      • served in Butler's Rangers as a private (Fryer and Smy, 77). [Probably incorrect and this Jacob enlisted with KRRNY.]
      • A person of this name is included in the (Niagara 1783, Ontario Register, 1968, V 1, #4, 199). See also the transcription on Niagara Settlers. See also the Haldimand Papers reference on this site for Jacob.
    3. James:
      • probably a brother of Jacob and Isaac,
      • he also lived in the neighbourhood of Standing Stone (Craft, 51);
      • appears in the "up the river" tax lists of 1776 and 1777;
      • served as a private in the KRRNY.
    4. Lambert:
      • Identified as "old" on the tax lists and presumed to be the father or close relative of the three above,
      • seems to have served as a private in the KRRNY.
      • Other relations with this surname were Tories and all of this family seem to originate from Kinderhook, NY, (Fraser, 440, 445-7, 1033-34.)
My thoughts about those on the Susquehanna.
There is little doubt that Lambert Sr and his sons Isaac and James are in the 1776 and 1777 Susquehanna tax records. This matches the statements in petitions that they were in Standing Stone on the Susquehanna. Miner's letters, published in 1845, state that there were 3 or 4 Vanalstine brothers. The truth is most likely that Lambert was the father and his sons Isaac and James were two of the brothers mentioned on the Susquehanna. Jacob could be the third brother. Stephen C. Young has Jacob as the Jacob who joins with Butlers Rangers but we know that there is also a Jacob in KRRNY. The Jacob who enlisted with Butlers Rangers and ended up in Niagara most likley enlisted at Ougquago, NY with his brother Bartholemew. Therefore Jacob of Standing Stone area would more likely be the Jacob who enlists with KRRNY. This fits better with Isaac, James and "Old" Vanalstine who all enlisted with KRRNY. Simon Vanalstine of KRRNY is not mentioned anywhere on the Susquehanna. Also, in the 1792 petition attributed to Lambert Sr of the 1st KRRNY, it states that Lambert had two brothers who died and it was argued earlier that these could be Jacob and Simon. Jacob might be the brother of Lambert Sr. There are still questions that do not have clear answers. Harmonious of Niagara and his sons Jacob and Bartholemew enlist much further north in Butlers Rangers at Ouaquaga, NY, also on the Susquehanna. It is doubtful these two sides of the family knew each other.

What about Lambert Sr living in Litchfield, CT?
In the 1788 Loyalist Claim mentioned above, grandson Lambert states that his grandfather was "from Litchfield, CT." Lambert Sr was born around Albany, NY and his children were baptized there. The family was on the Susquehanna around 1771 on land with a Connecticut connection and it seems a stretch that Lambert Sr had lived there. Miner states that the Vanalstines, Larraways, etc came from the Albany area and this seems to make more sense.

Are there any records that are tricky?
There is confusion in attributing the petitions in 1791, 1792 and 1797 [below] by Lambert Vanalstine.  Were these by Lambert Sr (b 1710) or his grandson Lambert (b. 1765). All three state that Lambert was in the 1st Battalion of KRRNY. The 1788 Loyalist Claim presented in person by the grandson states that his grandfather was in the 1st battalion KRRNY and was too old to travel. This deposition was verbally made to the commission and recorded by the clerk at the moment so is considered as reliable as any record can be. Therefore the 1791, 1792 and 1797 petitions by Lambert Vanalstine are all attributed to Lambert Sr because they all state he was in the 1st Battalion. His grandson Lambert was in the 2nd battalion as a teenager so these petitions should not be confused with him. However the fly in the ointment is a petiton in 1797 by Isaac, son of Lambert Sr, stating that his father died in 1792!

Further, the buck does not stop here. As a result of the 1797 petition, Lambert was granted lot 12, con 7 in Darlington Tp, Newcastle District. Nothing was done with this land till in 1833 when two descendants made conflicting claims on the lot. They were Issac J Vanalstine [2A1] and James Vanalstine [2B2i]. See the transcriptions below of the many pages in the case that came before the 2nd Heir and Devisee Commission. In 1834 the commissioners granted the land to Issac J Vanalstine which supports the idea that Lambert Sr was still alive in May 1797 in order for him to be the original nominee of the Darlington lot that was granted as a result of his 1797 petition.

    1A. Heir and Devisee Record
The H&D Commissions were held from time to time to settle land disputes. Both James and Isaac, first cousins once removed, entered competing claims to the Commission that was held in July 1833, along with affidavits to support their case.

    Two opposing claims
10 Feb 1833: James Vanalstine, Fredericksburgh Tp., yeoman, will claim lot 12, con 7, Darlington Tp, Newcastle District, 200 acres, as the oldest son & heir at law of Lambert Vanalstine, deceased, the original nominee at the sitting of the Commissioners under the heir and Devisee Act, July next.

1 July 1833: Isaac J Vanalstine, yeoman, claims lot 12, Con 7, Darlington Tp, is the eldest son & heir at law of Isaac Vanalstine, Richmond Tp, deceased who was the eldest son & heir at law of Lambert Vanalstine late of Fredericksburgh, yeoman, deceased - the assigned nominee from the Crown for the said lot.

    Affidavits in support of James
29 June 1833: Abraham Loucks [James's father in law], William Hawley, yeomen of Fredericksburgh, well acquainted with Lambert Vanalstine of Fredericksburgh, deceased, his wife the daughter of William Bell ... they are both dead and left no will ... James Jr is the eldest son and heir at law. Jonas Vanalstine, brother of James ... said "and from what he has heard at various times that he has good reason to believe" that Lambert [his father] was the original nominee.

23 July 1833: Peter Perry, MP for Bath, "can be proved by a hundred persons if necessary" that James is the heir to Lambert Vanalstine who married the daughter of William Bell ... that the Lambert who Isaac claims was not married to the daughter of William Bell but one Van Valkenburgh. There were two Lambert Vanastines and Isaac is heir to one and James heir to the other.

    Affidavits in support of Isaac
13 Mar 1833: Jane Vanalstine of Tyendiaga, spinster [sic: Jane was already married to Jonas Vanalstine and perhaps the clerk made an assumption based on her surname], that Isaac J Vanalstine now of Richmond Tp., yeoman, her brother, is the eldest son of her father the late Isaac Vanalstine of Richmond, yeoman, deceased, who died without having made any will; that the said Isaac Vanalstine her father was the eldest son of Lambert Vanalstine late of Fredericksburgh, yeoman deceased, who this deponent believes made no will.

20 June 1833: Catherine Bowen, personally acquainted with Lambert Vanalstine, 1st battalion, KRRNY, resided in Richmond Tp till shortly before his death when he was taken to Isaac's where he died, Isaac J Vanalstine is the eldest and only son of Isaac Vanalstine who died about 40 years ago, intestate. The deponent also swears that Lambert Vanalstine, a son of James Vanalstine (a younger brother of the aforesaid Issac Vanalstine, died about 8 or 10 years ago in Fredericksburgh.

20 June 1833: John Olliver or Allsion, John Sager Sr, Elizabeth Sager, Mary Sager and St?? Sager all make the same declaration as above in almost the same words and written by the same hand on the same day.

24 June 1833: Jonas and Jane Vanalstine, Innkeeper, Tyendiaga, swear that Isaac J Vanalstine employed by his father Isaac Vanalstine of Richmond and Fredericksburgh, deceased, to locate lands that were due to Isaac heir at law of Lambert Vanalstine, Fredericksburgh, then deceased, about 30 years ago, always understood the location to have been made in Darlington Tp. Also state that Lambert, late of Fredericksburgh, father of James, died 11 years ago and he was married to Anne or Nancy Bell, daughter of William Bell, and grandson of Lambert Vanalstine who died upwards of 40 years ago.

    Surveyor's report
3 July 1833, A Search in the Surveyor Generals Office, York, certifying that lot 12, con 7 Darlington Tp, 200 acres is located under Order in Council 12 July 1797 in the name of Lambert Vanalstine

    Commissioners remarks
Undated: A hearing of this claim is directed in pursuance, the 6th Section of 45 gro 3 ch 2.
In consequence of a letter of P. Perry Esq, 23 July 1833, produced by the agent for James Vanalstine [to] the Comissio[ner]s entertaining a doubt which Lambert Vanalstine was the original nominee. On a search into the petitions ... leads to the belief that the location was made to Lambert VA, the father of of Isaac, and a soldier in Sir J. Johnson Corps of York Rangers, upon his petition dated 18 May 1797 - but in a petition of Isaac Vanalstine dated Oct 1797 this Lambert Vanalstine is stated to have died in 1792 - so it requires to be explained how this I[saac] VA the ancestor of Isaac, if he died in 1792. to have received a location upon a petition in his own name in 1797.

but on 11 Sept 1833, before this report was signed, a rehearing of this claim was ordered pursuant to 6 Sec of  45 Gro 3 Ch 2. and directed that this ?? to not [be] acted upon.

Personally, in reading these affidavits, it reads like both sides honestly felt they were right given that 36 years had passed. Perhaps Lambert Sr did die in 1792 and James should have received the land. One wonders if bad feelings persisted.

    2. LAMBERT VAN ALSTINE SR UE (1710 - 1797)
VAFH records Lammert [Lambert] was the son by his father's second wife and baptized in 1710 and married in 1733 to Margarita Van Valkenburgh. Lambert werved in the 1st Battalion of KRRNY as stated in his petitions below. In 1784 he settled in Richmond Township along with sons Isaac and grandson Lambert.

There is uncertainty over Lambert Sr's year of death. A "Lambert Sr" petitions in May 1797 and is granted his extra 200 acres. Then in Oct 1797, Isaac, son of Lambert Sr, petitions stating his father is deceased and died in 1792! The conclusion in the Heir and Devisee Commission in 1833 is that it was Lambert Sr (b. 1710) who petitioned in May 1797. However it is possible that he did in fact die in 1792 and Lambert Jr is the one who petitioned in May 1797 and for some reason describes himself as "Lambert Sr". This researcher accepts the decision made in 1833 and attributes the May 1797 petition to Lambert Sr (b. 1710). Therefore it follows that Lambert Sr died between May 1797 and Oct 1797 when his son Isaac petitions and describes his father as "deceased." This remains a controversial topic. Online genealogies usually show 1792 as the death year.

In 1788, Lambert Jr [2B2], grandson of Lambert Sr personally attends the Loyalist Claims Commission and states that his grandfather is too old to travel and was in the 1st Battalion of KRRNY. Also in this claim it is stated that Lambert Sr was from Litchfield, Connecticut and had moved to the Susquehanna before the war started in 1776.

    Birth & marriage

2B. JAMES VAN ALSTINE UE (1738-1782) and his wife LYDIA [LARRAWAY] VAN ALSTINE UE, son of Lambert Vanalstine SR, UE

Jacobus (James) Van Alstyne, baptized about 1738, married 1759, Lydia Larroway. James died about 1782. Lydia married second in 1785/6, Isaac Crowther or Crowder. She died 1794.

Burleigh records that James Van Alstine, deceased, late of Tryon Co., NY, served all war in Sir John Johnson's 1st battalion. Lydia was in Montreal in 1782 and later married Israel Croutha.

James's son James [2B4] stated in his 1802 petition that "his father served in Sir John Johnston's Royal Regiment and who died in Montreal in 1780" and his son Isaac [2B3] in 1808 stated that James died in 1782. VAFH states he died in 1798. The KRRNY list below shows him alive in Aug 1780. Let us settle on 1782 as his death year.

Because James Vanalstine died during the war he was not technically a Loyalist. This was not a problem for his oldest sons, Jonas and Lambert, as they were loyalists in their own right. However the younger sons, Isaac and James were too young to serve . So in 1808 son Isaac petitioned successfully for his mother Lydia to be placed on the UE list. See the full petition below in Isaac's section, [2B3]. Isaac states that his father "died in His Majestys service in 1782. That your petitioners mother, Lydia Van Alstine came into this Province in 1784 and resided in the Midland district until her death in 1794. Prays ... to order the name of Lydia Vanalstine to be inserted on the UE list." Further, Richard Cartwright certifies "that Isaac Van Alstine lived with him as a servant in 1786 at which time his mother resided in the Midland district and ... that she removed into this Province from Lower Canada in the year 1784."

In addition, in Isaac's 1808 petition, there is an affidavit by Parshall Terry stating "that James Van Alstine resided at a place called Standing Stone, on the Susquehanna River in the province of Pennsylvania [Standing Stone Tp, Bradford Co., PA; south of the Finger Lakes a little below the NY/PA border.] at the breaking out of the Rebellion ... he joined the Royal Standard in 1778 and was a Private soldier in Sir John Johnsons Regiment at the time and he died in Montreal in 1782."

    Birth, marriage, death
Jacobus (James) Van Alstyne, baptized about 1738, married 1759, Lydia Larrowa[y] who was born 11 Nov 1745, daughter of Simeon Larrowa[y] and Jannetje Van Valkenburgh. He was killed in the Revolutionary war in 1778. She married second in 1785/6, Isaac Crowther or Crowder. She died 1794.

Jas Van Alstine had served all the war in Sir J. Johnsons Regt. Lived on Susquehanna. Had lands on Susquehanna.

2B2. LAMBERT VANALSTINE UE, (1765- 1824), son of James Van Alstine UE and Lydia Larraway.
It has been accepted that Lambert was born in 1765. Lambert and his brother Jonas, were teenagers during the war. Lambert is listed as a fifer in the 1st Battalion of KRRNY. He married Anne Bell, the daughter of William Bell [see Heir and Devisee report] in 1788. They had 6 children and he later married Maria Hannah and had 7 more known children. In Lambert's 1822 petition below, he states that he has 16 children and 7 are still living with him. He died in 1824.

Lambert first settled on his land grant in Richmond Township (Lot 4, Con 1) and later moved to Fredericksburgh Township. Three of his children petition in 1819 and state that Lambert Sr is "of Fredericksburgh." It is further confirmed in two affidavits in 1837 and 1839 in petitions by his children David and Ann that Lambert was "formerly of Richmond." His 1810 petition is about his lot in Fredericksburgh and so it is concluded that Lambert moved to Fredericksburgh at least by 1810.

    Death
Lambert died in 1824 as stated in a petition by his son David Secord Vanalstine [2B2x] where David writes that, "said Lambert Vanalstine a UE Loyalist at the time of his death was 64 years of age which was in the year 1824." This gives a birth year of 1760 which is not a huge concern in that it differs from 1765; perhaps he was baptized when he was 5 years old. Further off the mark is the 1828 petition of son Alexander [2b2ix] that includes an affidavit stating that "Alexander Vanalstine is a son of Lambert Vanalstine ... that Lambert would be 80 if still living." This would give a birth year of 1748.

2B2ia. LAMBERT VANALSTINE - son of James Vanalstine Senr
This Lambert is likely the son of the above James Vanalstine SUE. Lambert would not qualify because his father is not an original Loyalist and that is why the land board refused the petition. By 1834 his father was the most senior James living. He is not mentioned in VAFH.

2B2ii. LAMBERT VANALSTINE Jr SUE (c1790-1847) - son of Lambert Vanalstine UE
    Birth
Lambert is not mentioned in VAFH. For some reason he waits till 1824 to petition for land as a SUE. In 1835 he is said to reside in Kingston in a land grant and so the burial of Lambert Vanalstine in 1847 at age 60 in Kingston is assumed to be the same man. This gives a birth year of 1787 however his parents are married in 1788 and his brother James is stated to be the oldest son so Lambert would be born c1790.

2B2iii. JONAS VANALSTINE Jr SUE (c1795-aft 1840 ), son of Lambert Vanalstine UE
    Birth
Jonas is not mentioned in VAFH. Given that he is at least 21 years of age by 1819 it can be concluded that he is born by 1798 or earlier. His wife was born in 1796 and usually men married women younger than themselves and they married in 1817 when she was 21. He petitioned on the same day as his brother Duncan not that that means much. Let's estimate he was born c1795. For sure his mother was Anne Bell.

2B2vi. JACOB VAN ALSTINE SUE (1794- ), son of Lambert Vanalstine UE
There are no petitions or land grants under the name Jochum/Jochem Vanalstine but the birth register clearly records that name. The later records are all in the name of Jacob Vanalstine and it is concluded here, without any real evidence, that Jochum and Jacob are the same person. VAFH records Jochum's baptism with no additional information.

2B2vii. JOHN VANALSTINE SUE (1804- ), son of Lambert Vanalstine UE
There are no petitions under the name Jonathan Vanalstine. Perhaps the John born in 1804 died and a later son was named Jonathan but went by John. Or perhaps John and Jonathan were sons considered to have different names and maybe the later Jonathan died young. Taking the lead from VAFH, the John who survived childhood and married Anna Borner is recorded as the one born in 1804.

    Birth
John Van Alstyne, born in Canada in 1804, married Anna Borner, born in Canada. Their children and grandchildren are listed in VAFH.
A Jonathan Van Alstine, born about 1810 is listed as a later son. No further information is given. [334]

2B3. Isaac Van Alstine SUE (1773- ), son of James Van Alstine, UE
Isaac was too young to serve in the Revolutionary war. His 1790 petition as a SUE was rejected because his father James died before the end of the war. However he successfully petitioned again on 15 Feb 1808 for his mother Lydia to be placed on the list and she is placed on the list the very next day! This suggests that a back room agreement had been made. Isaac petitions 10 days later as the son of Lydia and gets a grant on land. He also petitions for the 200 acres that Lydia would receive were she alive. This is refused.

2B4. JAMES VANALSTINE SUE (1777- ), of Fredericksburgh - son of James Vanalstine UE
James married Rebecca Foshee or Forsher before 1800. James petitions for land in 1802 as the son of James Vanalstine and was denied. His older brother Isaac was refused in 1790 on the same grounds that their father died during the war thus was not a loyalist eligible for a grant. Isaac, above, petitioned in 1808 and got his mother on the UE list and got his grant as a result. In a petition too faint to read James petitions again, presumably under his mother Lydia and gets a grant as a SUE in 1810.

    3. HARMONIUS VANALSTINE UE (abt 1737 - abt 1804) of NIAGARA
No petition has been found from Harmonious Vanalstine UE but he was a loyalist, received a grant and settled around Niagara. His children did petition and from them we learn something about the man. His daughter Margaret's 1834 petition is most informative stating that "Harmanus Vanalstine was an inhabitant of the US before 1775 near Albany, NY and joined the Royal Standard about 1777 as volunteer under Col Houston, not sure how long he served, Harmanus Vanalstine died in Niagara Township about 30 years ago", making his death about 1804.

Two of his older sons (Jacob and Bartholemew) served in Col Butler's Rangers and are UE loyalists in their own right. His five other children are younger and petition starting in 1796 as sons and daughters of a Loyalist. The oldest son is Jacob and he was born about 1757. Thus if Harmonious was about 20 when Jacob was born then Harmonious had to be born about 1737.

    Committee of Conspiracies

3A. JACOB VANALSTINE UE (1757 - aft 1837) - probable older son of Harmonious Vanalstine UE
Jacob is 26 years of age in 1783 thus born about 1757. Jacob's younger sisters and brothers speak of having  brothers in Butlers Rangers. These brothers would be Jacob and Bartholemew and thus they are also sons of Harmonious even though no record has been found that directly states that relationship. Jacob settled in Grantham Township, Lincoln County which is today amalgamated into the city of St Catherines.

In Jacob's 1796 petition below he states that he married a daughter of a loyalist. She has not been identified.

3B. BARTHOLEMEW VANALSTINE UE (1760- ), older son of Harmonious Vanalstine UE
Bartholemew is 23 years of age in 1783 thus born about 1760. His loyalist leanings were evident in 1777 when he was arrested but later released. By 1778 he was with a corps under Sir John Johnson and joined at Augquago on the Susquehanna River. [This location has not been identified.] Bartholemew states in a 1797 petition that he has not collected any of his land suggesting that he did not come immediately to Upper Canada. His signature on the 1784 discharge letter [6c] enclosed in the 1797 petition shows a strong hand suggesting a good education. There are no petitions from children so either he moved back to the USA or he died shortly after 1797 with no children. The land board states that he must "appear in person" suggesting they suspected he was not settled. No land was granted to him as a result of his petition. It is doubtful that Batholemew settled in Upper Canada.

    1777

Bartholomew Vn Aelsteyn was taken in early Aug 1777 with several others [1116] and confined by the Albany Committee. Batholemy Van Alstine was released in Jan 1778 on giving his Oath of Allegiance to the State of NY. [1136]

    6. WHO IS THIS WIDOW?
The land records below are not dated but are circa 1800 and reflect locations made to date. Lambert (presumably Lambert Sr) and a widow are granted adjacent lots in Williamsburgh Tp., Dundas County and this strongly suggests a connection. This widow could be Lydia Larroway, be the wife of James Vanalstine, who died near the end of the war. In 1808, Lydia, posthumously, was given UE status so her children could be granted land as children of a loyalist. See the James section for more details. If it is not Lydia then who is it? Could it be the wife of Simon Vanalstine, the probable brother of Lambert who was still alive in 1783 but died.

The Williamsburgh abstract index to the land records show that Lambert's grant from the Crown is dated 7 Mar 1806 but the other half is shown granted to John Chrysler on 24 Apr 1806. Lambert sells his west half to Chrysler on 28 Mar 1807 and registers it 4 July 1808. Why did the widow's half of this lot end up with Chrysler? Perhaps the Township papers might shed some light.
