Pioneers of the Bay of Quinte

WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY:
Hannah Tompkin (1757 - aft 1811) married William White (abt 1750 - 1811) and they were born in NY and settled in Sidney around 1800. A bunch of us have worked hard at finding out who their NY families were without success

In the 1790's and shortly after, a few "Tompkins" pioneers have been identified in Upper Canada. This page is dedicated to identifying them, determining any connections, and the focus will be on Samuel and Stephen Thompkins of Sidney Township and any relation to the above Hannah (Tompkins) White. It is possible that Philip Tompkins of Cramahe is a brother to Stephen.

Use the links to quickly see the information below.

1. SAMUEL and STEPHEN TOMPKINS, SIDNEY TP.
OVERVIEW
Stephen and Samuel Thompkins are elected to Sidney Township duties beginning in 1804. The working hypothesis is that Samuel Thompkins and Hannah (Thomkins) White are siblings, and Stephen Tompkins is a son of Samuel, all born in NY and came to Sidney around 1800, a few years before 1804. They were not loyalists and they did not petition for land. This implies they had enough money to purchase the better land.

Samuel is absent from the land records in Sidney and is last recorded in 1807 in the Township Minute book. Stephen owns Lot 3, Con 5 in Sidney which is very near Frankford and in the 1820's moves to Murray Tp, Lots 1 and 2, Con 2 which is not far away. This is the same man. It appears that Abraham is his son. Samuel and Stephen are either father and son or brothers and Samuel likely dies shortly after 1807. Possibly he leased the same farm that Stephen later buys.

SIDNEY TOWNSHIP MINUTE BOOK
The list below comes from the transcription of the Sidney Township Minute Book that is on this web site. Samuel and Stephen Thompkins are adults in 1805 so are likely born in the US and could be related to Hannah (Tomkins) White. The later names are likely their children.

SIDNEY LAND RECORDS
Samuel Thompkins has not yet been found in the Sidney land records. Stephen Thompkins first appears in 1811 on Lot 3, Con 5 and he moves to Murray Tp by 1822. The later transactions appear to be the children. I will examine all of these records.

It is likely that these records are for the same man. Caleb, son of the above Philip is in Cramahe until 1822, then Murray Tp in 1825 then at some point moves to Norwich. This is not proven.

4. DEBORAH TOMPKINS of SOPHIASBURGH TP, PRINCE EDWARD CO.

OVERVIEW
This Deborah, a widow, married a Tompkins who is not named in any of the documents but a Jeremiah Tompkins is given a grant in Sophiasburgh and may be her husband.

PETITION
14 Sep 1831, York, Deborah Tompkins, widow, of Sophiasburgh, that during the administration of Peregrien Maitland she rec'd a lease for 100 acres of land in Block D, Sophiasburgh, which is bounded on the west by halloweell and on the south and east by the rear of 2nd Con , for 99 years, She does not have a lease in hand and is unable to prevent depredators from carrying away the greater part of the timber trees. She has been informed that Abraham Lazier and Isaac Demille both of Sophiasburgh have applied to purchase part of her land. That your petitioners husband served faithfully as a militia man during the late war and suffered property loss in consequence for which no compensation was ever received. Note: There are a number of papers and in summary as early as 1822 when she was called in to Council on 22 Feb 1822 about her petiton, she was complaining about the matter and the Clergy Board was tardy at resolving the lease. In 1825 Peter Valleau and his son Hilliborn? were informed that she did have a lease and they were to stop their "molesting her" and make restitution.

8. TOMPKINS in WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY
OVERVIEW
This information below was collected by Jeanne Ross of Duncan, BC and is posted here with her permission.
"I am still poking around Westchester as I wouldn't be surprised if the Tompkins and Whites came from there before they got to where you found them -- although there's about 3 generations involved, I would think.

So far I have found Nathanial Tompkins Sr. who died in 1684 leaving a minor son Nathaniel -- and one of his executors was Nathaniel White.

See a record involving the estate of Nathaniel White who died in 1690, and had a minor son William.  As a adult, William assembles a series of adjacent plots of land up until 1732 when he sells his land.  This land is adjacent to the land of Nathaniel Tompkins Senior and Nathaniel Tompkins Junior.  After 1732 there are no more records for any William or Nathaniel Whites in Westchester until 1785 and that is a William White from Stamford, CT."

The records below come from the New York, Land Records, 1630-1975 at the Familysearch.org web site.

(There is a lot more detail about the land and what's on it)
Also details of the Van Cortlandt family
Witnesses: William Smith Junr, Samuel Jones

[There are a lot more details about the Van Cortlandts in this, but the summary is that Pierre's father died bankrupt and they had to sell off their land to pay the debts.  John Tompkins bought a big chunk for not very much and moved his family there.  Cortlandt Manor is strongly connected to Putnam -- there is a book on Ancestry called "Records of Early Settlers of Putnam County and Cortlandt Manor, NY" that I need to look at more, but I think the Phillips family of Putnam also bought a lot of Cortlandt Manr.
